Technology to make ads more personalized

In Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report,” the main character walks down a long corridor as personalized advertisements chase after him along the walls. A video billboard shouts to Tom Cruise’s character in the film: “John Anderton, you could use a Guinness right about now!” Current advances being made in computer science indicate that real-time advertising, specifically tailored to individuals, will soon exist outside of science-fiction movies.



IU scientists designed special rugged computing equipment that will be used for the Polar Grid Project, which is studying Earth's shrinking ice caps in Antartica and Greenland.

A team from IU’s Pervasive Technology Labs and University Information Technology Services bundled up powerful computing equipment and sent it off to Antarctica on Friday.The equipment is specially designed for the Polar Grid Project, an organization formed to provide better information about Earth’s shrinking ice caps.

Fasting takes a toll during Ramadan

This month, IU Muslim students are fasting in observance of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection and self-sacrifice observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.  The fasting, which includes abstinence from water as well as food, begins at sunrise and ends at sundown with prayer and a meal called iftar.But some say fasting is difficult in college because students have to balance so many responsibilities.

Could a new hit video game be the next step in teaching evolution? Will Wright, the game designer behind The Sims, spent years creating "Spore," a new video game that is supposed to simulate the process of evolution. But, local specialists in both biology and learning sciences say that Spore is a fun game and nothing more.

Emergency Medical Technicians to be housed in McNutt

For the first time, student emergency medical technicians will be stationed at a campus dormitory on weekends so they can quickly respond to emergencies. The IU Emergency Medical Service club will put student EMTs at the McNutt Residence Center from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. The volunteers will act as first responders to treat students who are injured or intoxicated.

Going ‘tray-less’ to go green

When IU students enter a typical dining hall on campus, they commonly reach for a tray, grab some items, check out and enjoy their meals. However, the Edmondson Traditional Dining Room at the Collins Living-Learning Center might make the decision to get rid of trays in order to help the environment and cut costs. “We’ve been looking at Collins for a test site to be greener,” said Gina Brooks-Lay, Collins dining manager.

With classes, homework, friends and life in general, many students sometimes need help managing stress or keeping up their self-esteem.  Counseling and Psychological Services now offers a solution that’s designed to benefit students on campus.Every Monday, CAPS will host “coping skills” sessions free of charge to all IU students.
