Sophomore outfielder Kipp Schutz will be forced to sit out due to appendicitis, according to Matt Brady, IU assistant media relations director.

The IU baseball season starts up on Feb. 20 in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg, Fl., for which Schutz might not be fully recovered. Schutz has already sat out for a lesser injury earlier this spring. He is expected to compete when he does return, which could be back for games against Georgetown University, the University of South Florida or Indiana University-Purdue Fort Wayne, all of which will be played before Feb. 24.

Schutz recovered from a season-ending shoulder injury in his freshman season. He returned in the 2008 season to hit .317 with six home runs and 48 RBI as a redshirt freshman. Slated to hit fifth for the Hoosiers in 2009, Schutz is an intergal part of IU's lineup.

Many thought it was possible for him to be injured while playing with the basketball team, but this recent injury has nothing to do with his participation on either team. What do you think about the recent news? How would the Hoosiers fair if Schutz were not to return for the early games?
