Suspect identified in string of burglary, rape cases

Devin Grounds

Due to extensive investigation, Devin Grounds, 28, has been identified as a suspect in the string of burglaries involving an unknown masked man on the southest side of Bloomington. Bloomington Police Department charged Grounds for entering an apartment on Walnut Street and raping the resident. Detectives identified Grounds as a suspect in that case due to DNA evidence.

Detectives originally did not believe this crime was connected with the string of burglaries.

Detectives are still investigating the other incidents reported in the early morning hours of Sept. 5 and Sept. 8. However, Grounds is considered a suspect in all cases.

On Monday, detectives filed additional charges against Grounds for breaking into an apartment in the 400 block of East Melrose Avenue.

That case occurred Sept. 8 when a 22-year-old female victim woke up and noticed a male suspect wearing a mask crouched next to her bed.

She began screaming, and the suspect fled the residence. Grounds’ DNA was located inside the victim’s residence, adding the additional charge of burglary.
