‘Five Figure’ Salary for Ex-I.U. Center 

INDIANAPOLIS UPI -Bill Garrett, former center on Indiana University’s basketball team which was rated No. 7 nationally for the 1950-51 season, signed a “five figure” contract Thursday to play with the Harlem Globe Trotters. Harry Hannin, promotion director for the Trotters, said the un-disclosed salary would be one of the highest ever paid a first-year man in pro basketball. Mr. Garrett was a 1951 draft choice of the Boston team In the National Basketball Association but did not report. He was called for Army service and was dis-charged Aug. 8. The 6-foot-3 inch Garrett, whose Shelbyville team won the 1947 Indiana high school championship, played center for I.U. and frequently controlled the ball against players half a head taller. He now is married and lives in Indianapolis. Mr. Garrett signed in the office of Dick Miller, president of the Indianapolis Coliseum Corp. who said the Trotters will appear at the Stale Fairgounds Coliseum New Year’s Eve on a program Including an N.B.A. game between Philadelphia and Fl. Wayne, Mr. Miller said three other N.B.A. doubleheaders are planned there early in 1954.
