SPARC to remain on IUSA ballot

IUSA/Supreme Ct.

The SPARC for IU ticket remains eligible for the IU Student Association election, the Student Body Supreme Court ruled early Thursday morning.

The court’s preliminary ruling indicates that the Election Commission violated the Election Code by not providing SPARC with an interpretation of the code when SPARC candidates requested advice.

Further, the court decided SPARC would be allowed to replace vice president for congress candidate Thomas Dauer, who removed his name from the executive slate, prompting the Election Commission to disqualify SPARC from the election.

Prior to the Wednesday night hearing, documents provided to the court indicated that congressional candidate Bronson Bast was a likely replacement.

The decision was communicated to SPARC presidential candidate Sidney Fletcher, Election Commissioner Melody Mostow, Commission Member Evan Farrell as well as the Indiana Daily Student early Thursday, but full opinions and statements by the court will be available within three days.

The SPARC executive slate, which was initially disqualified from the election late March 20, will remain on the ballot in the IUSA election next Tuesday and Wednesday. The other tickets are YOUniversity and Hoosiers 4 Solutions.
