US finds weapons in Iraqi schools

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Men and boys played soccer just feet away from a rocket-propelled grenade hidden in the tall grass. Little children frolicked on huge, loaded anti-aircraft guns abandoned in the middle of a highway. Schools where families slept were stacked with thousands of boxes of ammunition.

Bush addresses Iraqis

Kurdish fighters swept into Kirkuk and other areas around Iraq's northern oil fields on Thursday, fresh evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime was history. "Your nation will soon be free," President Bush promised Iraqis in a televised address. There were fresh American casualties as well as widespread looting in Baghdad, 24 hours after the Iraqi capital fell to U.S. forces.

Opposition forces crumbled in northern Iraq on Thursday as U.S. and Kurdish troops seized oil-rich Kirkuk without a fight and held a second city within their grasp. U.S. commanders said signs pointed to a last stand by Iraqis in Saddam Hussein's birthplace of Tikrit.

Top Islamic militant killed

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Israeli helicopters launched four missiles at a car carrying Islamic militants in Gaza City on Thursday, killing a top commander and wounding 12 bystanders, Palestinian witnesses and doctors said. The leader of the Islamic Jihad's military wing, Mahmoud Zatme, 30, died in the attack, a group official said.

Cheney condemns war criticism

NEW ORLEANS -- The advance of U.S. troops into Baghdad is proof that early criticism of the war's plans was misguided, Vice President Dick Cheney said Wednesday. The war is "one of the most extraordinary military campaigns ever conducted," Cheney said, speaking to the annual convention of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. "With every day, with every advance of our coalition forces, the wisdom of that plan becomes more apparent," Cheney said.

Victory may not ensure lasting peace

Now that coalition forces have taken control of Baghdad, military triumph in the war on Iraq is virtually guaranteed. But long-term peace and rebuilding may not be won as quickly. Pictures of Iraqis celebrating may cover newspaper pages today, but some IU faculty members say the struggle for peace is just beginning.

Iraqis cheer fall of brutal regime

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Their hour of freedom at hand, jubilant Iraqis celebrated the collapse of Saddam Hussein's murderous regime Wednesday, beheading a toppled statue of their longtime ruler in downtown Baghdad and embracing American troops as liberators.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians on Wednesday killed at least four people, including a 16-year-old boy, as thousands poured into the streets to mourn seven killed in a missile strike Tuesday night.
