Trustees remember IU connection, friendships with governor

The flag at Memorial Stadium rested lifeless against its pole at half-mast Saturday. The nearly 30,000 in attendance for the IU football game stood, but it wasn't to cheer a spectacular play. The moment of silence was IU's first of many tributes to alumnus and Indiana's 47th governor, Frank O'Bannon. Friends remembered O'Bannon's life as being a true testament to the Hoosier success story.

State mourns Gov. Frank O'Bannon

Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon, who died Saturday after suffering a massive stroke one week ago, will be remembered this week at ceremonies in the Statehouse and his hometown of Corydon, Ind. O'Bannon's portrait and personal items will be on display in the rotunda of the Statehouse Thursday. The public is invited to file past and write a message in a memorial book.

Israeli official says killing Arafat an option

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The second-ranking official in the Israeli government said Sunday that killing Yasser Arafat is an option, as thousands of Palestinians took to the streets across the West Bank and Gaza Strip promising to protect their leader. Israel blames Arafat for blocking peace efforts and preventing a crackdown against militants who have carried out two suicide bombings in the last week.

On first visit to Iraq, Powell encouraged by progress

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday he is convinced "the winds of freedom are blowing" across Iraq but acknowledged the possibility that terrorists are trying to make their way into the country and sabotage the process toward self-rule. Powell spent 12 hours in talks with the team of American officials guiding Iraq in the postwar period and with the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council.

Plaque presented to hospital

The parents of Jenny Suhr, an IU student who died from brain cancer four years ago, presented a plaque in her memory Friday to Bloomington Hospital's Olcott Center for Cancer Education. A picture of Jenny's face is inscribed into the plaque as well as a poem about her life.

Skate park to open in November at Upper Cascades

Bloomington skating enthusiasts are one step closer to having their own park. Last week the Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners announced the acceptance of a $605,000 bid placed by contractor Dave O'Mara to create a local skate park. The price covers all costs and is in the range the city expected to pay, according to John Turnbull, sports and fitness director of the Bloomington Parks and Recreation department.

Buddhist temple opens in town

Pairs of shoes lined the entryway to the Chamtse Ling temple Sunday as Buddhist worshippers gathered for the first teaching in the shrine room celebrating the public opening of the center. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet Tenzin Gyatso dedicated the temple in a ceremony Sept. 7, but Sunday marked the first day the public was welcomed inside.

Fair of the Arts provides forum for local talent

Beside the Farmers' Market's ripe produce and in the shadow of the towering construction across the street, Saturday's Fair of the Arts claimed about 20 vendor tables. At 401 N. Morton St. in front of City Hall, old veterans and newbies alike came to show off their creative skills in an effort to delight the local spectator into a sale. In-state rival poses tough task for IU

Invitational opens with Fighting Irish

Tough test awaits Hoosiers at tournament

Seeking to snap their first three game winless streak since the 2000 season, the Hoosiers head up-state to South Bend to face Akron today and Fresno State on Saturday as part of Notre Dame's Berticelli Memorial Tournament. After a tie and a defeat to Georgetown and UConn respectively in last week's UConn Classic, the Hoosiers (1-1-2) fell six spots from No. 5 to No. 11 in this weeks adidas/NSCAA poll. Return home allows for fresh start

There's nothing quite like kicking off a new football season. Technically, IU has already done that. But they played two games on opposite sides of a very large country, which is no easy way to start a season, even for a good team. So playing at home gives the Hoosiers an opportunity to start the rest of their season on a somewhat fresh note -- kind of like starting your day by throwing on some deodorant and a hat in lieu of taking a shower.
