In-town Spring Break volunteer chances offered

TEACH KIDS HOW TO SWIM For those who plan on staying in town over spring break, the YMCA's SPLASH Learn to Swim Program will be needing swim instructors for a one-week intensive class that will be held from March 15 through 19.

Red Cross Month kick-off a success

Ophelia Project visits Bloomington

An innovative conference came to Bloomington this weekend. The Monroe County Ophelia Project worked with the national branch to organize a way to use pre-existing programs in the Bloomington community, such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Girls Inc. and Girl Scouts, to spread its message and mentoring program.

Last Hoosier Hope

Illinois A one-point win over Ohio State Sunday evening put the Fighting Illini on top of the Big Ten, where they take sole possession in the conference. Illinois' (22-5, 13-3 Big Ten) only Big Ten losses came to Purdue at home and on the road at Northwestern and Wisconsin. In his first year at Illinois, Bruce Weber was able to lead the team right into the NCAA Tournament and give the Illini the Big Ten title.

GOP: gay old party?

The Religious Right is so strong the Republican Party can't help but pander to them. They're the strict conservative power structure that is pushing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. They continue to engulf the GOP and to foster contempt for gays. Therefore, I don't blame the Republican Party directly for the amendment's support. I blame the Religious Right.

The call of the weekend

The winter night's breeze carried the beef and beans smell of a late-night taco bar through the Sample Gates. I was taking a study break, on a walk from the Indiana Memorial Union to Jimmy John's for a late-night sub. A section of sidewalk by Kilroy's on Kirkwood had disappeared under a mass of people standing outside the entrance. I crossed the street to get around. The people were jovial, happily blinded by beer goggles and gushing punch-drunk promiscuity, while I was a pissed-off kind of sober.

Oscar-worthy transformations

During my post-Oscar browse this year, I noticed a small but interesting trend that has been brewing in the category of Best Actress. Over the past five years, this award has generally been presented to women who underwent dramatic physical transformations for the roles in question. Also, four years out of five, the winning roles portrayed characters based on real people.

America, you're fat. Sorry, we mean no offense, but it's just true. Obesity is on the rise, and it's affecting every age group, every race, both genders and every state of the union. (To find out whether you are at risk for obesity, use the government standard: start with your height in inches, square it and take 4.25 percent of the result. If you weigh more than that, you're obese, according to Slate Online Magazine.)

Three comics shake up the market

Comedian Steve Medley appeared at the Market in the Indiana Memorial Union Friday as part of a night of comedy sponsored by Comedy Caravan. Medley, along with two other comics, performed jokes and skits in front of a full audience. The show included Scott Dunn, who has been on "The Man Show" and was featured on Bob and Tom's latest CD, and Randy Madsen, whose sense of humor caused the only outburst in the night's events. Each performer presented material for about 30 minutes.

3 missing in boating tragedy

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Divers searched the Baltimore, Md., harbor Sunday for the bodies of three people missing after a water taxi capsized with 25 people aboard. A woman was killed, and two others, including an 8-year-old girl, were critically injured.

Indiana represented in new hip-hop movement

Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Eminem all have something in common -- and its not that they are all part of the same record label. They are all from big cities with tremendous exposure. Though Los Angeles, Detroit and New York are known for producing hip-hop's latest and best talent, the Midwest region is just beginning to gain exposure from artists such as Nelly, Kanye West and Twista.

IU students get 'real world' experience at Fox News

Last weekend, two IU students had their 15 minutes of fame in a live Fox News broadcast from New York City. Senior Lisa Berenholz and junior Jonathan Gibson were part of a pilot contest for producing a "fair and balanced" news story, organized by IU alumnus John Malkin, vice president of affiliate sales and marketing for Fox News.

Collins builds teddy bears for children

Free Roly Poly sandwiches weren't the only reward for students at the Collins Living Learning-Center Clubhouse Saturday. For volunteer students who sewed teddy bears for Middle Way House children, knowing a child's life was better was reward enough. "I'm hoping it will be a comfort for (the kids) to have a stuffed animal to keep them company when they go to a strange new environment," said senior Kelly Walsh, coordinator of the event.

Rockets explode in central Baghdad

Big Red to make case Tuesday

The Student Body Supreme Court of IU voted 8-2-1 Friday to accept Big Red's appeal of its disqualification. The Court will hear the case Tuesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room of the Law School. The hearing is open to the public.

A tropical underworld

A gold-spotted black stin-gray lazily ripples across a stack of algae-covered rocks to 36-year-old Tom Meador's food-laden fist, which looks small, pink and vulnerable poised in the water as the ray glides closer and envelopes it. It hovers there only a moment as Meador strokes the 28-inch ray's underside and then glides away as he laughs. "She's not really interested in this food," he says, tossing the brown pellet food to the other fish in the small pond. "She'd rather have some frozen fish or shrimp." Meador shakes the water off his fist and seals up his bag of fish food, glancing around at his other pets. Rather than cats or dogs, gold-flecked piranhas leer out at him, tiny rainbow-colored tetras dart past and an African sultana turtle lurks under a dark deck hidden beneath strands of green vines, a 15-foot palm tree and several orchids.
