Men set to battle Big Ten foes

"This is what we train for." Assistant track coach Wayne Pate summarized the team's upcoming weekend at the University of Michigan, the site of the 2004 Big Ten Indoor Championships. The men's team enters the meet with nearly every one of its entries in position to score in their particular event. "Things are really starting to come together," said IU coach Randy Heisler. "We've got so many guys that are ranked seventh or eighth in the conference that are capable of placing higher. If they place even one or two spots higher, they change the whole dynamic of the meet because it gives us more points and at the same time takes points away from other teams."

Better things to do than watch IU

IU takes road trip with national ranking implications

Coming off its second big upset of the season, IU (5-2) takes its show on the road as the team looks to add two more tallies to the win column. This weekend, standing in its path to national prominence are the Marquette Golden Eagles and in-state rival Notre Dame. Still energized after their 5-2 win over No. 12 Kentucky, the Hoosiers depart Bloomington today excited and ready for their next challenge. While Marquette is not ranked as highly as the Fighting Irish, both matches are expected to be highly competitive, as IU looks to finish out its pre-conference schedule with as much momentum as possible.

Team looks to end Michigan's streak

Defending Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Champion Michigan looks for a third straight title this year, with IU looking to end that streak, as the team finished second to Michigan the past two seasons. Since 1999, IU finished in third twice and runner-up the last two seasons, as the team's last indoor title came in 2000.

Hoosiers starting 2 top pitchers in effort to get above .500

The IU baseball team will travel to Millington, Tenn., this weekend to compete in the Service Academy Classic tournament at USA Stadium. The Hoosiers will play Murray State Friday, Kentucky Saturday and end the road trip with Navy Sunday. The players emphasized that every game is important but whenever Kentucky is the opponent there is extra incentive.

League meet at hostile Purdue

The Hoosiers men's swimming team will travel to Purdue this weekend to compete in the Big Ten Championships. IU finished the regular season with a 5-7 overall record and was 3-4 in Big Ten play. The team said they hoped they have hit their peak just in time. Among the bright spots for the Hoosiers is freshman Colin Russell, who is coming off a season in which he consistently finished first and second in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Diving will be the one factor that puts the Hoosiers at a true disadvantage. Throughout the year, they have been saddled with having only one eligible diver in junior Ryan Fagan.

Hoosiers begin quest 'to be best team in Midwest'

Room service and wake-up calls must be common for the Hoosiers softball team (5-4). The team, which is fresh off trips to Florida and Texas this month, is traveling to Illinois to compete in Southern Illinois' Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic. The Hoosiers travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Indiana State (4-4), Southern Illinois (5-2) and an untested Harvard team (0-0) this weekend. The team feels it has something to prove this weekend and looks to earn a few wins against tough competition. "We're trying to be the best team in the Midwest -- that's our goal," said IU coach Sara Hayes Nottger. "ISU being in-state and Southern Illinois being in the area gives us the opportunity to compete with the best in the Midwest."

'Last chance' to make NCAA meet

The IU women's swimming and diving team takes to the water again this weekend in the IU "Last Chance" Invitational in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the SRSC. The Hoosiers host Ohio State, Illinois and the University of Indianapolis in the last meet before the NCAA Championships. For the Hoosiers, the "Last Chance" meet is a great way to show their skills before their trek to the NCAA titles.

IU returns to action in Bucknell Invite

With nearly three weeks gone by, IU coach Barry King's squad is anxious to get back to action this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. This weekend, the Hoosiers will matchup against east coast programs for the first time this season. Among the teams, IU will play Hartwick and Providence, both considered to be east coast powerhouse water polo programs. In addition, the Hoosiers will take on George Washington and Harvard in Lewisburg, Penn., this Saturday and Sunday.

Regular season finale Sunday

After suffering through a 1-8 record in the last nine games, the end is finally near for the Hoosiers. IU will enter its final game against the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans Sunday at home. The 11-15 Hoosiers will have their hands full against MSU, as the Spartans come into the game with a 19-6 overall record. The Spartans are currently on a two-game losing streak, suffering losses at the hands of Ohio State and No. 4 Purdue.

'Miss Saigon' big sis to 'Les Mis'

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg are grand writers indeed. They wrote the first French rock opera to hit the stage, "La Revolution Francais." Their musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel Les Miserables opened in 1980 in Palais des Sports in Paris, making it to Broadway only seven years later.

FASA brings artist to IU

Jacobsmeyer is the second artist in a three part series in which professional artists come to IU to educate and encourage aspiring artists. Kappa Alpha Theta to showcase antiques works this weekend

N. Korea says U.S. stalling nuclear talks
