Candidates focus on education

While the campaigns for the White House are heating up, local elections have more important implications for IU students. Gubernatorial candidates (incumbent Democratic governor) Joe Kernan and Republican candidate Mitch Daniels both say education is one of the more important issues for getting elected. "Education is one of the cornerstones to economic revitalization of Indiana," said Marc Lotter, press secretary for Mitch Daniels.

Democrats select Mason to run against Dodge in District 51 ASHLEY, Ind. -- A former DeKalb County Council member will be the Democratic candidate on the November ballot in state House District 51. In a slating contest Tuesday, Democratic precinct officials in the northeastern Indiana district chose Jim Mason over Jerry Smith, both of Auburn. The district covers Steuben and DeKalb counties.

The Kirkwood apartments prepare for grand opening

Jim Murphy, the president of CFC, Inc., had one goal when starting The Kirkwood apartments -- To provide a place for urban living in a small town setting. The apartment complex, located between Madison Street and College Avenue, is two blocks away from the Monroe County Courthouse. It will open for business Friday.

The conference is geared toward professionals who want to improve their performance in the workplace. The focus is primarily on those who work as school counselors.

Acting class teaches improvisation

An excited group of Mini University participants improvised five original plays in an acting class taught by IU theater professor Murray McGibbon Monday. McGibbon, who directed for 10 years in South Africa with the Playhouse Company, taught an hour and 45 minute class called, "What It's Like to Be an Actor."

National writers visit Bloomington

Continuing its tradition of fostering creativity and writing technique since 1940, the IU Writers' Conference will be holding its 64th annual conference starting Sunday. National writers will visit Bloomington for the conference, which will be held in the Indiana Memorial Union through July 2. It will feature poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction.

Saudi Arabia offers 1-month amnesty to Islamic militants

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi Arabia offered Islamic militants a limited amnesty Wednesday, saying their lives would be spared if they surrendered but they would face the "full might" of state wrath if they did not. The ultimatum, issued in the name of King Fahd, called on militants to turn themselves in within a month -- suggesting the kingdom was paving the way for a stepped up campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters who have shaken the country with a series of deadly attacks

Auburn transfer commits to Hoosiers

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marco Killingsworth needed a change. IU needed a rebounder. Tuesday, Killingsworth and the Hoosiers both got what they wanted. Killingsworth, Auburn's leading scorer last season, announced he would transfer to IU next year. "I look at it as a fresh start," Killingsworth said in a telephone interview. "I wanted to get a fresh new start. Now I am."

U.S. proposing aid in North Korea talks BEIJING -- U.S. negotiators presented the first detailed American proposal Wednesday on resolving the standoff with North Korea, offering the North energy aid and a security guarantee in exchange for dismantling its nuclear program. The proposal is meant to break an impasse in talks that began their third round after earlier negotiations brought no progress on Washington's demand for the North to scrap its nuclear program.

Union Board throws outdoor concert

National singer-songwriter Ari Hest and Bloomington bands The Swell and After Mars will play in Dunn Meadow from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in a summer concert arranged by Union Board. Hest, who hails from New York City, will perform at the concert as part of the promotional tour for his forthcoming debut album, "Someone To Tell," which will be released by Columbia Records Aug. 10.

In fact, out of the 253 restaurants in Bloomington, nearly 100 are independently owned -- a high ratio considering the conservative eating habits of Midwesterners who usually prefer restaurant chains. Food lovers looking for meals from any ethnicity, from Indian to Greek, Irish to Mediterranean, Mexican to Thai, can find it in Bloomington.

Group vows to assassinate new Iraqi prime minister

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's interim prime minister said Wednesday he was determined to confront the mastermind of bombings and beheadings who threatened to assassinate him, and the U.S. military said it killed 20 foreign fighters at the suspected terrorist's hideout. A recording purportedly made by Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi threatened to kill interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi and fight the Americans "until Islamic rule is back on Earth."
