Opera Theater opens summer season with Bock's 'She Loves Me'

The School of Music's Summer Music Festival kicks off its elite summer opera season next week with Jerry Bock's 1964 musical "She Loves Me." The opera is scheduled for July 9 through 11 at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. "She Loves Me," the basis for the films "You've Got Mail" and "In the Good Old Summertime," was inspired by 1940 film "The Shop Around the Corner" starring Jimmy Stewart. The film was an adaption of Miklós László's play "Parfumerie," set in Budapest.

Miss Gay IU competes for crown at state

Glitter, glamour, sequins and makeup consume senior Chris Grooms' life these days as he prepares to compete as Bianca Defy in the Miss Gay Indiana pageant July 7-9. "I always get butterflies during competitions," he said. "I think those butterflies are a signal to me that I'm ready. If I don't have those butterflies, I think something's wrong. They are good, nervous butterflies."

Borromeo Quartet comes to IU archive' to IU

Borromeo Quartet, a world-renowned string ensemble that has been declared "simply the best there is" by The Boston Globe will participate in the Summer String School at the School of Music. Its members, first violinist Nicholas Kitchen, second violinist William Fedkenheuer, violist Mai Motobuchi and cellist Yessun Kim, who will perform in a master's class on chamber music Tuesday and Wednesday, play more than 100 concerts annually and are all on staff at the renowned New England Conservatory.

IU alum pursuing dream

Tom Brooks ran a personal best of 8 minutes, 36.3 seconds in the 3,000 meter steeplechase last week at the Cardinal Qualifier at Stanford University, allowing him to qualify for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials. The days before the race, his second to last chance to qualify, Brooks said he was optimistic. "I'm super confident," said Brooks, heading into the twilight meet. "I'm not concerned. My times are coming down."

Policy to screen IU job applicants

Honesty is the best policy for new applicants hoping to get a job at IU. Background checks of all new applicants will be required prior to employment beginning July 1. Planning for the enactment of this new policy began 18 months ago, said Daniel Rives, associate vice president of University Human Resource Services. The background check will only be conducted on new staff employees. "The University thinks it's important that there is a safe and secure environment for students, visitors and employees," Rives said.

Locals react to Moore's new film

Long lines crowded the lobby and entryway of Showplace East 11 cinema Friday where Michael Moore's controversial new movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" opened in Bloomington to sold out crowds. The film, an attack on President Bush and the war in Iraq, was No. 1 at the box office this weekend, grossing close to $8.4 million its first day.

Charles Lee is an American citizen, but he's been in Chinese prisons since January 2003 -- and the charges are completely trumped up, according to his fiance of three years, Yeong-Ching Foo. Foo, a former software consultant from Silicon Valley, came to Bloomington Friday to join about a dozen Indiana practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual philosophy of Chinese origin, in Peoples Park for an informative display and protest on behalf of Lee and others like him.

New trustee to be named Wednesday

While the presidential election is in full swing, another campaign is taking place in Bloomington as the IU community is about to elect a member to the IU board of trustees. The trustees consists of nine members; six of which are appointed by the governor while the remaining three members are chosen by IU alumni. Each year one of the three elected members is chosen in a ballot process which began this year after commencement. The ballots will be counted Wednesday in the Main Library.

White Sox lead Windy City series

CHICAGO -- Miguel Olivo and Timo Perez homered, and the Chicago White Sox roughed up Greg Maddux and overcame two homers by Sammy Sosa to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4 Sunday. The White Sox won two of three in the first crosstown series of the season. The teams meet again next weekend at Wrigley Field.

Bush presses Turkish admission to EU during NATO summit

ANKARA, Turkey -- President Bush sought Sunday to bolster America's partnership with vital ally Turkey, a courtship complicated by terrorists' threats to decapitate three Turks unless the country's companies stop aiding U.S. forces in Iraq. Bush hoped to use a NATO summit here to nail down details of the alliance's tentative plan to assist with the training of Iraqi security forces. But he also was getting a reminder of widespread opposition in Turkey to the war in Iraq, its southern neighbor.

State to enact new BAC law

A new device that checks a driver's blood alcohol content will soon be required by law to be installed into offender's vehicles that have more than one drunken driving violation. State Representatives Ryan Dvorak, Bob Bischoff and Dennie Oxley are working together to demand tougher penalties against Indiana citizens who have been charged with driving while intoxicated. "This law is designed to have a serious impact on repeat offenders," said Ryan Dvorak, D-South Bend. "Public Law 76 allows counties that have an ignition interlock program to let the courts authorize a machine to be installed into an automobile that checks the driver's breath before the car can start."

Indiana defeats Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana was in a foul mood and made Kentucky pay for it. Courtney Lee scored 20 points, Mr. Basketball A.J. Ratliff added 17, and Indiana set an All-Star record by hitting 44-of-59 foul shots Saturday night for a 93-90 victory and a split of this year's two-game series. "In practice, we shoot at least 50 free throws a day. We know that down the stretch it may come to free throws," Ratliff said.

Green rejects Nader endorsement MILWAUKEE -- The Green Party nominated Texas attorney David Cobb as its candidate for president Saturday, rejecting Ralph Nader's efforts to secure the party's formal endorsement and likely access to the ballot in key states like Wisconsin and California. Nader, the party's candidate in 1996 and 2000, had told Green officials months ago he would not accept the party's nomination for president, preferring to build a coalition of third-party groups and independents rather than running under one banner.

Chamber Music Series attracts world-class musicians

International musicians will visit Bloomington in the Chamber Music Series this summer as part of IU's School of Music Summer Music Festival. The music series began June 25 and will run until July 21. Jerzy Kaplanek, an associate professor who teaches violin and chamber music at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada, will perform at the Summer Music Festival for the fifth time.
