IUSA court denies Kirkwood

After a week of petitions and appeals, the Kirkwood ticket's struggle for a run-off election has come to an end. The Student Body Supreme Court denied Kirkwood's appeal Friday on procedural grounds, citing the fact that the ticket submitted its petition past the Feb. 24 deadline. The IU Student Association Elections Commission refused Kirkwood's petition, which was filed Feb. 28, for the same reason.

Residence rates to rise next year

The cost of Bloomington campus housing is going up again. Concluding its monthly meeting Friday in the Indiana Memorial Union, the IU board of trustees unanimously approved an average increase of 3.55 percent in the cost of all dorms and on-campus apartments for the next school year.

With the help of the IU Police Department and Bloomington Police Department, Indiana Excise Police conducted a raid at Axis Nightclub early Friday morning, resulting in 68 alcohol-related citations.

SOUTH BEND -- President Bush pitched his plan to privatize portions of Social Security Friday in Joyce Hall on the University of Notre Dame campus, where he emphasized that allowing workers to set aside portions of their Social Security tax will benefit young Americans.

Syrian pullout to begin today

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Lebanese officials said Syrian troops will start moving toward eastern Lebanon on Monday in a pullback that will take two or three days, while Syrians -- not unexpectedly -- backed President Bashar Assad's decision and insisted Sunday he was not bowing to international pressure.

IU hockey loses out on national title hopes

The IU club hockey team ended its run for the team's first-ever national championship with a 3-2 loss to host Oakland University Friday night. The team finished 1-2 in a round-robin tournament in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Div. II National Championship in Rochester, Mich. last weekend, failing to qualify for the semifinals round.

IU falls to No. 3 Illini, defeats Penn State

The IU men's tennis team couldn't have asked for much more from such a tough Big Ten opening weekend. In their first conference action of the season, the Hoosiers capitalized on some of their best efforts to date en route to splitting their two weekend matches at the IU Tennis Center.

Roark throws 26 innings, strikes out 30 on weekend

Coming off a 1-3 record in Tulsa last weekend, the IU softball team traveled south to Bowling Green for the Western Kentucky Invitational. The Hoosiers started off strong Friday morning against Buffalo, winning 4-0. Junior Megan Roark (4-6) continued her strong pitching of late, throwing seven shutout innings while tying a career-high with 13 strikeouts.

1,000 expected at 'Rock Indiana' counterprotest

Hate, discrimination, intolerance and bigotry. Those are the words IU junior Matt Brunner uses to describe SJR7, Indiana's proposed amendment to ban both same sex marriage and civil unions. "It's just a really bad amendment," he said. "We want to stand up to the hate that it promotes."

IU snags 5th in Big Tens

The Hoosiers rolled into Iowa City for the Big Ten Championships Saturday after a two-week layoff. They didn't leave disappointed. The team's overall place of fifth matched IU coach Duane Goldman's previous Big Ten high set in 1994, with seven wrestlers qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis two weeks from now. There is a chance that an eighth man could be sent as a wild card.

Wilson leaps to IU record, NCAA lead

Friday at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Last-Chance Meet, junior All-American Aarik Wilson soared past IU's fourteen-year old indoor long jump record, set previously by Alan Turner at the NCAA Championships. Wilson's winning leap of 8.12 meters also eclipsed his personal best of 7.88 meters. The jump also serves as a tremendous boost to IU's team chances at the NCAA Indoor Championships, set to begin this Friday at the University of Arkansas.

Xbox console cord causes smoke, sparks in Read Center

The Bloomington Fire Department responded to a call from Read Center at about 1 p.m. Thursday after numerous electrical items, including an Xbox video game console, had been plugged into a power strip and overheated, causing smoke and sparks, according to an IU Police Department report. A dry chemical extinguisher was used prior to the fire department's arrival.

1 out of 3 Hoosiers reach NCAAs

Three Hoosiers attempted to qualify for the NCAA Indoor championships one last time, but only one succeeded. Sophomore Lorian Price and juniors Kelly Siefker and Larra Overton all competed in the Alex Wilson "Last Chance" meet held at Notre Dame this past weekend, but only Overton will be moving on.

Hoosiers dominate in division play

When the No. 9 Hoosiers left Bloomington this weekend they were undefeated against all six teams awaiting them in Pennsylvania. Six games and 94 goals later, nothing has changed.

Mike Roberts, Ryan Tapak and Mark Johnson said goodbye to Assembly Hall Saturday -- barring a dreaded NIT game in Bloomington. The soon-to-be-departed were showered with applause, given scarce moments of playing time and then allowed to address the Hoosier faithful who had cheered them on for four years (six in Roberts' case).

Anthony Roberson scored 21 points, including two free throws with 15 seconds remaining, and Florida upset No. 3 Kentucky 53-52 on Sunday. The Gators ended an eight-game losing streak to Kentucky and probably ended the Wildcats' hopes of getting a top seed in the NCAA tournament.

Overshadowed by a career night from sophomore Rod Wilmont, the Hoosiers' three seniors walked out of their last game in Assembly Hall with a win. Setting a career high in points and three pointers in the first half, Wilmont, a Miramar, Fla. native, finished with 20 points and six rebounds, leading IU to a 77-55 win over Northwestern.

Journalist counters U.S. shooting report

ROME -- The Italian journalist wounded by American troops in Iraq after her release by insurgents rejected the U.S. military's account of the shooting and declined Sunday to rule out the possibility she was deliberately targeted. The White House said it was a "horrific accident" and promised a full investigation.
