IU primed for Big Ten battle

The IU men's track and field team travel to Purdue this weekend to compete in the Big Ten outdoor championships. The competition begins at noon Friday and concludes after Sunday's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled for 3:45 p.m. After last year's third-place finish, IU's best since 1992, the Hoosiers have set their sights high this year. "This time of year it's all about business," coach Randy Heisler said. "We have a chance to be very competitive. You never know what will happen in championship meets." A number of athletes are prepared to score big points. Reigning triple and long jump champ, junior Aarik Wilson, currently leads the Big Ten rankings in both events. Freshman Kiwan Lawson is ranked third in the long jump, the same spot he claimed at the Indoor Championships in February.

Men's golf team headed to NCAAs For the first time since the 1996-97 season and the first time in coach Mike Mayer's six-year tenure, IU has been selected to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Hoosiers will participate in the Central Regionals in West Lafayette next weekend, May 20-22. "We are excited and a little relieved," Mayer said. "We really felt like we deserved this after the good, productive season we had. We beat a lot of good teams. We feel like we can compete, and we're ready to get started."

NCAA study shows 'disturbing' trend of gambling among athletes

CHICAGO -- The NCAA released a study Wednesday that indicated 35 percent of male athletes and 10 percent of women athletes have gambled on college sports in the past year and that Division III athletes are the most likely to gamble. Division I athletes were the least likely to wager on college sports.

Team looks to buck losing streak

The IU baseball team had a four-game series last weekend at Michigan State, and will have another four-game series at home this weekend against Michigan. This upcoming series and the final four-game series against Purdue will determine if the Hoosiers will make the Big Ten tournament.

Hoosiers face Wildcats

After a year hiatus from NCAA tournament action, the No. 21 Hoosiers (17-7) return to the big dance as the No. 2 seed against Arizona (6-12), the No. 3 seed, at 11 a.m., Friday in Los Angeles at Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of Southern California. For the Hoosiers, this will be their 21st appearance to the round of 64 in the last 26 years.

Assistant coach resigns

Men's basketball coach Mike Davis announced assistant coach Ben McDonald's resignation in order to pursue other opportunities, Wednesday. "Ben has made some key contributions to the Indiana program over the last three seasons," Davis said. "We appreciate his efforts and wish him the best in the future."

Hoosiers get in final prep for Big Ten after solid performances

This weekend's Billy Hayes Invitational provided the IU men's track and field team with a chance to get some final competitive preparation before next weekend's Big Ten outdoor championships at Purdue. The meet saw several personal bests and a number of performances that should bode well for IU. "It's usually a good meet for those competing," IU coach Randy Heisler said. "The addition of (Herana-Daze) Jones and (Courtney) Roby will strengthen our sprinting at Big Ten's." In their first outdoor meet of the year, senior football players Jones and Roby contributed to IU's winning 4x100-meter relay team. Roby also finished fourth in the 100-meters in 10.7 seconds.

Women's track perform well at Billy Hayes Invite The IU women's track and field team had solid performances during Friday night's 26th-annual Billy Hayes Invite. The Invite was highlighted by the Hoosiers' performance in the 1500-meter race. In the event, four out of five Hoosiers turned in personal bests as senior Audrey Giesler clocked in a time of 4 minutes, 31.35 seconds, sophomore Kelly Siefker shaved seven seconds off her previous personal best with a time of 4:31.38, junior Julie Shields turned in a 4:43.09 and freshman Kristin Whitezell ran a 4:45.36.

Seniors say farewell

This spring the IU women's tennis team says goodbye to three seniors who have been crucial in the Hoosiers run at claiming a share of this year's Big Ten title. Seniors Martina Grimm, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran depart from Bloomington after each left her mark in the IU record book. Tran, a telecommunications major from Grand Rapids, Mich., played most of the 2004 season in the No. 2 singles position and in several different doubles combinations. Teaming with sophomore Sarah Batty, Tran climbed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's doubles national rankings to No. 26, posting a 12-1 record and going undefeated in Big Ten play. Instrumental in several of IU's biggest upsets, Tran led the IU doubles lineup in winning the doubles point against higher-ranked Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, a match which helped clinch a share of the Big Ten regular season title.

Cubs bats wake up, pound D-backs

CHICAGO -- Derrek Lee is finally feeling at home with the Chicago Cubs. Lee went 5-for-5, including a three-run homer, and had five RBIs Thursday as the Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. "It was just one of those days, it seemed like every pitch I was looking for was there for me," Lee said. "I was aggressive with it and got a good swing on them and was able to get some hits. "You're not going to be able to go 5-for-5 every day. I don't think I'd ever gotten five hits before. It was a great day. It was a lot of fun out there," he said.

Sam Alford ends 40-year career

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford will now have to work without his father at his side. Sam Alford, who has been director of basketball operations at Iowa, will end a 40-year career in college and high school coaching when he retires Aug. 1. The University made the announcement Thursday.

NEW YORK -- Spider-Man ads on bases didn't fly with baseball fans. A day after announcing a novel promotion to put advertisements on bases next month, Major League Baseball reversed course Thursday and eliminated that part of its marketing deal for "Spider-Man 2."

Cardinals get more relief than expected

PHILADELPHIA -- St. Louis manager Tony La Russa expected a high-scoring game where the bullpens would get stretched thin. Instead, the Cardinals' relievers kept it under control. Hector Luna's three-run homer capped a five-run first inning and the Cardinals got three scoreless innings from five relievers for a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. "It looked like it would be a 12-10 game," La Russa said. "Our bullpen had a great series. This is a tough park to pitch."

IU playing for chance to advance

The IU women's golf team began play Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Central Regional Tournament in Normal, Ill. Illinois State University and the ISU Golf Course will serve as host for the event. The Hoosiers were selected to the Regional after their strong performances in their six tournaments during the spring season. After struggling at the Central District Invitational, the Hoosiers never finished lower than No. 6 for the rest of the year, including a victory at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout in March.

Seniors prepare to move on

As the season begins to wind down, and the academic year comes to a close, IU baseball's seniors reflect on their careers in Bloomington. For some, a shot at the pros is assured, while others would just be happy to continue playing baseball any way possible. Senior pitcher Chris Behrens said he hopes to continue playing baseball after he graduates.

Series sweep will clinch tourney berth

Billy Hayes Invitational attracts top talent

The men's track team will host its final track meet of the year Friday evening at the Robert C. Haugh track complex. The meet is named for Earle C. "Billy" Hayes, who served as IU's track and cross country coach from 1925 to 1943. The meet will boast abput 800 athletes competing within just a few hours.
