Still searching for its first championship of the fall season, the IU men's golf team will look to defend last fall's first place finish at the Xavier Invitational when they tee off today in Loveland, Ohio. Last fall the Hoosiers won three of four tournaments, but the two-day tournament hosted by Xavier will be the first time IU will have the role of defending champions -- a role the team is looking forward to.
IU's 1-0 lead suddenly didn't look so good after sophomore back Jed Zayner received a red card when he tackled Michigan back Dawson Stellberger. The hard tackle broke Stellberger's leg and resulted in a lengthy stop in play so an ambulance could take the fallen player off the field.
EVANSTON, Ill. — For the second straight year, IU and Northwestern needed overtime to decide the outcome. This time the location was Northwestern's Ryan Field.
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior defensive lineman Russ Richardson said it all, "Coulda, woulda, shoulda." Those were the words out of Richardson's mouth after he nearly picked off a Northwestern touchdown pass to junior Taylor Jones in the first overtime of Saturday's game.
INDIANAPOLIS -- For the early part of the season, the focus on the Indianapolis Colts has been on quarterback Peyton Manning and the league's No. 4 passing attack. In Sunday's 35-14 win over the Oakland Raiders, running back Edgerrin James reminded everyone that he's still a force on this team, and other teams had better pay attention.
Coming off its four-match road trip to start the 2004 Big Ten campaign, the IU women's volleyball team returns home this weekend for two tough matches against nationally ranked opponents.
Assembling strong team chemistry and maturing as a team through a demanding schedule seems to be the mindset of the IU men's swimming and diving team.
No, the IU men's soccer team has not packed up and moved out of Bloomington. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America's No. 3-ranked Hoosiers return from a five-game road trip spanning the map from New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania and, just this week, Kentucky.
In Bloomington it's never out of season to talk about "Little 5," the main attraction of what is known as the "World's Greatest College Weekend" on the last Saturday of April.
Furcal's homer wins game 2 for Atlanta ATLANTA - More than anyone, Rafael Furcal wants the season to last as long as possible. He made sure the Atlanta Braves play at least two more games.
The IU field hockey team continues a four-game road trip this weekend as it heads to Evanston, Ill., to battle Northwestern and the University of New Hampshire. So far, the Hoosiers' road swing has resulted in a win and a loss to Bucknell and Penn State, respectively.
The preseason is simple: practice, practice and more practice. With the exception of a summer tournament here and there, men's tennis players are usually guided by routine in the weeks leading up to the season. The IU men's tennis team gets a chance to shake off that routine for the first time this weekend at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, which features players from Purdue, Butler, the University of Toledo and Xavier University, in addition to IU. For the players, the Invitational serves as a way to get some much desired match experience.
Rods, reels, camouflage, shotguns and shells -- not exactly a description of football, but for a select few on the IU football team, that is how they spend their time after the drills and whistles end and the final horn sounds.
Same record, same offense, different momentum. The IU Hoosiers and the Northwestern Wildcats enter this weekend's contest on opposite sides of the momentum spectrum. While both teams have an identical 2-3 record, Northwestern is coming into the game off of a major 33-27 overtime victory against the then-No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes.
Astros 9, Braves 3 ATLANTA -- The Killer B's didn't have to go it alone. Roger Clemens and the powerful Houston lineup made sure the Astros got off to a good start in their quest to finally win a playoff series. While Clemens continually pitched out of trouble, Brad Ausmus, Lance Berkman, Carlos Beltran and Jason Lane hit homeruns for the Astros to lead a 9-3 rout of the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of their NL division series Wednesday. The Astros set a franchise record for runs in a postseason game. They twice scored seven while losing to Philadelphia in the 1980 National League Championship Series -- the first of their seven straight playoff series losses.
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL schedule-makers sent Indianapolis an early message. Play well in the opening month, and it could lead to a better finish. Four weeks into the season, the Colts have done their part. They are 3-1 and hold a distinct advantage in the AFC South after wins at Tennessee and Jacksonville. But the players understand there's still more to do. "I don't really know what we've done yet," quarterback Peyton Manning said. "We're 3-1, but that means absolutely nothing now." Manning, last year's co-MVP, called the opening obstacle course the most challenging start of his seven-year NFL career.
DAVIE, Fla. -- With running back Ricky Williams ready to reverse directions and come out of retirement, his former Miami Dolphins' teammates were mixed in their reaction Wednesday. Defensive end David Bowens said he would like to see Williams rejoin the Dolphins, in part because they're 0-4. But Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas said he doubted that help from Williams is on the way. "He will not be playing for the Dolphins," Thomas predicted. "He's got too many things with the fans and too much with the media, and that's the reason he ran from it in the first place. He wouldn't come back here." Thomas might be right. Gary Ostrow, an attorney who has represented Williams, said the 2002 NFL rushing champion hopes to receive clearance from the league to play again before the Oct. 19 trade deadline so he can be dealt by Miami.
At about 7 a.m., sophomore Liz Davis wakes up and gets prepared for the day ahead of her. After getting dressed, brushing her teeth and all of the other morning rituals, Davis departs for her 8 a.m. class. Normally, she would have classes until noon and then wait until soccer practice later that afternoon. But instead, Davis now makes a detour to receive treatment for a stress fracture she developed during the preseason. Because of injury, Davis has decided to redshirt her sophomore season at IU. Davis already has experience on the field after playing in 12 games in 2003 and was looking forward to this year's competition. After being named the 2002 Indiana Girls High School Soccer Player of the Year while starting four years on North Central's varsity team, she arrived at IU with high goals -- on and off of the field.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Phelps wants his shoulders to hurt. He's ready to put the weight of American swimming on his back, and carry it into the spotlight as a mainstream sport. "I want to be able to change the sport of swimming, in and out of the pool," Phelps said. After taking home eight medals -- six gold and two bronze -- in Athens, Greece last month, this weekend will be his chance to bring attention to American swimming.
