AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Tiger Woods is the Masters champion once again, turning back a surprising challenge Sunday with a shot of sheer magic and a birdie putt to win a playoff he never expected. A spectacular finish of birdies and bogeys finally ended when Woods produced the most important shot of all -- a 15-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to capture his fourth green jacket and finally put away the gritty Chris DiMarco.

Hoosiers extend spring preseason winning streak to 3

Before the start of the spring soccer season, IU coach Mike Freitag said redshirt freshman Kevin Noschang was one of the emerging players from the class of 2008. In the team's first two games, Noschang had three goals and he scored his fourth in the team's 2-0 win over St. Louis Friday night.

The Hoosiers could have confused the present for the past when they arrived Saturday at the annual Pepsi Invitational to a marvelous stadium and a crowd in the thousands in Eugene, Ore.

Neville takes 2 victories at Pepsi Invite

Competing without its top distance runners, who will debut next weekend, IU finished third in its first trip to the Pepsi Team Invitational with Oregon capturing first. Sophomore All-American David Neville offered IU's best performance, sweeping the 200 and 400-meter dashes. After posting an NCAA Regional qualifier in the 200 meters last weekend, Neville got his 400-meter qualifier in a narrow 46.20 second victory.

IU sweeps Illinois for 1st Big Ten wins

After struggling last weekend against Michigan State and losing a heartbreaker to Louisville Wednesday, the IU softball team traveled to Illinois and Iowa this weekend for four conference games. The Hoosiers wasted no time turning things around, beating the Illini 4-3 Friday evening.

Mike Davis has been frustrated over the past few seasons as he struggles to find players who can comprehend and execute his system. Davis is a system coach, and believe it or not, that offensive system that fans groan and moan about can work and has. However, Davis -- a system coach -- needs system players. WOMEN: Kappa Kappa Gamma weathers talented field to win Team Pursuit, spring series championship

The dreary weather wasn't perfect, but the scene was perfectly set for a battle between two cycling titans -- Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta. The gun fired to start the final race, and Theta kept it close for almost the entire first half. But despite qualifying in second place, Kappa eventually pulled away, cruising easily to a Team Pursuit win and a spring series championship.

IU road trip full of Big Ten match-ups

After losing a heartbreaker Wednesday afternoon at Louisville, the IU softball team will continue its five-game road trip this weekend against Illinois and Iowa. Wednesday's game against the Cardinals went into extra innings before Louisville shortstop Courtney Moore hit a game-winning home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Indianapolis meet may mean a state title

The Hoosiers have a chance to claim their first state title, when they face Notre Dame, Purdue and Butler tomorrow for the Indiana Cup on Eagle Creek in Indianapolis. In a separate contest, IU also will take on the Irish and Louisville. The Indiana Cup entitles rowers on the winning team in this uncelebrated sport to stand tiptoe on any misty morning wherever they want -- all around the Hoosier State, that is.

IU to take on OSU, No. 31 ND

IU will play host to Ohio State at 4 p.m. Friday and Notre Dame at 10 a.m. Sunday, but the match against the Irish is looking to be closer than close. "We'll be favored against Ohio State. They have some injuries -- they're kind of having a down year," said IU coach Lin Loring. "Notre Dame should be a really close match." The statistics back up Loring's analysis.

Wild Women of Midwest flock to Bloomington

Calamity Jane, the IU women's ultimate frisbee club team, will play host to the Wild Women of the Midwest tournament this weekend. The tournament will start 10 a.m. Saturday and continue at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Evan Williams Field on the corner of 10th Street and the 45/46 Bypass and at North Fee Lane Fields at 17th Street and Fee Lane.

Hoosiers look for 7 straight wins at OSU

If the IU men's tennis team wants to keep its streak alive, players are going to have to earn it. Winners of their last six matches, the Hoosiers will face what could be their toughest test in a month, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face the No. 33-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. IU will look to continue its strong play from top to bottom, a balance that has keyed the Hoosiers' surge in recent weeks.

Players welcome new IU assistant

The IU men's soccer team announced the hiring of a new volunteer assistance coach Tuesday on the heels of the team hosting the Midwest Soccer Coaches Symposium this weekend. As the featured event to the symposium, IU plays St. Louis University in the team's third spring friendly at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Bill Armstrong Stadium. David Giffard joins IU after working for five years under former IU player and assistant coach Mike Getman at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

IU begins West Coast swing

Little Fifty event gives big race a 'run' for its money

Legs will start to make their way around the track in a warm-up to Little 500. But these legs are not peddling bicycles tomorrow, they are moving the bodies of the runners participating in the third-annual Little Fifty running race. Little Fifty involves teams comprised of four runners completing 50 laps at the Haugh Track and Field Complex. One runner from each team completes a lap, and then that runner is allowed to hand off with another teammate, similarly to how riders in the Little 500 make bike exchanges.

Hoosiers acquire more than expected with freshman duo

IU coach Bob Morgan visited Ballard High School in Louisville, Ky., looking for a utility infielder, David Trager. Trager's teammate, Chris McCombs, saw an opportunity and approached Morgan about watching a game he was pitching. Morgan agreed, and a year later the 6-foot right-hander has struck out 15 batters in eight appearances for the Hoosiers.

IU to reveal Bennett's replacement today

After more than a month of searching for the next women's basketball coach, the IU athletics department will announce the new coach today at 1:30 p.m. in the Hoosier Room in Memorial Stadium. The new coach will replace Kathi Bennett, who resigned as head coach in March after five seasons. In Bennett's time in Bloomington, she compiled a 72-75 record and led the Hoosiers to one NCAA tournament appearance in 2002.
