IU mens soccer set to defend tourney title

This year’s Big Ten Tournament might be a little bit different for the IU men’s soccer team, which enters the competition as the defending tournament champion and Big Ten regular season champion for a second straight year.

Hoosiers look to reach ‘next level’ at Big Ten Singles Championship

The IU men’s tennis team will conclude its fall season this weekend at the Big Ten Singles Championship against some of the nation’s best. Up to 16 of the nation’s top 125 men’s tennis players will be in action this weekend at the tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Hoosiers are hoping to end the fall season on a high note.

Without Harrison, Colts offense isn’t the same

Tony Dungy’s team policy is painted on a wall inside the Indianapolis locker room: “No excuses, no explanations.” It applies to mistakes, assignments and even injuries to significant players. But when perennial Pro Bowl receiver Marvin Harrison is missing from the lineup, things undoubtedly change for the traditionally high-scoring Colts.

When the IU club tennis team steps onto the court there is no holding back. Unlike years past, the 2007-08 team is finding their strengths early on and becoming a dominant force in the league. Having started this year’s season 10-0, a spot at nationals is becoming a reality rather than a fantasy.

IU football prepares for Northwestern

Last Saturday, the IU football team (6-4, 2-4) celebrated becoming bowl eligible, something it had not done in more than a decade. By Sunday morning, the celebration was a thing of the past, and preparing for this weekend’s game at Northwestern is now the only thing on the Hoosiers’ radar.

Zeller not coming to IU

After months of speculation, IU recruiting target Tyler Zeller has made the decision to play college basketball at the University of North Carolina. Zeller announced his decision Monday at a press conference in his hometown of Washington, Ind. Zeller, a 6-foot-11 center, is ranked No. 22 in the nation for the 2008 recruiting class, according to recruiting service www.rivals.com. UNC coach Roy Williams adds another five-star prospect to his team, beating out IU, Purdue and Notre Dame. “North Carolina was the best fit for me,” Zeller told www.CarolinaBlue.com, part of the Rivals recruiting network.

IU drop meets to No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Michigan

The IU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams don’t like losing, but they feel they have plenty of positives to take out of their respective defeats to Michigan and Texas last weekend. “We wanted to show our guys what top five teams are,” said IU coach Ray Looze. “We saw it and have a better idea of what we have to do.”

IU completes final fall tournament

Competing in the Western Michigan Duals, their last tournament of the fall, the Hoosiers took advantage of the chance to improve their game before the spring season starts in January. The team ended the short fall season optimistic about the spring. Junior Alba Berdala advanced to the finals of her flight Sunday, but lost to Kerstin Pahl of Western Michigan. Pahl also defeated freshman Charlotte Martin before playing Berdala.

Exhibition season ends with visit from down under

The IU women’s basketball team rounds out its short exhibition season tonight at 7 p.m. at Assembly Hall with a game against the Showtime Skins, an Australian touring team. IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack acknowledged that she has a young team this year, but she said she will be looking for improvement against the Skins.
