Sophomore steps up scoring, team leadership

·

Every team needs a player it counts on. They rely on the player when times are tough. For IU women's basketball team, that player is sophomore Jenny DeMuth. Early this season, DeMuth has been playing with a purpose and is determined to lead the Hoosiers back to the NCAA Tournament.

Baseball closers

CHICAGO -- Dumping yet another big salary, the Oakland Athletics traded closer Billy Koch to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in a six-player trade. In exchange for Koch and two minor leaguers, the Athletics will get White Sox closer Keith Foulke, catcher Mark Johnson, minor league right-hander Joe Valentine and cash. "Keith Foulke and Mark Johnson did a tremendous job for us, and we appreciate their contributions to our success, but this trade made sense for us in the short- and long-term," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said.

Cubs pitcher signs on for 3 years

·

CHICAGO -- Mike Remlinger doesn't see why his string of playoff appearances has to end with the Chicago Cubs. The left-handed reliever finalized a $10.65 million, three-year contract with Chicago on Tuesday and will bolster a Cubs' bullpen that blew numerous leads last season and squandered 25 saves. "I've had the luxury of going to the playoffs for four straight years with Atlanta, and I don't look at this as anything other than a chance to keep that winning tradition going," Remlinger said Tuesday.

Bye-bye, bye

·

This season's unprecedented level playing field, coupled with its new division alignment, is proof that the National Football League needs to adjust its playoff structure. A quick glance at the current standings shows that, in the AFC, three teams are tied for the top seed, while five are within one game. Since only six teams make the playoffs, this means that two teams within one game of the best record in the entire conference won't even get in.

Relishing success of streak

·

Just two weeks ago, IU was 4-5-0 overall, 0-2 in conference play, and looking up at an 8-point deficit in the Great Midwest Hockey League. Coming off a pair of conference losses, the Hoosiers could have easily let the season start to slide.

FSU outscores, outplays

·

The IU women's basketball team lost 58-47 to Florida State Tuesday night in Tallahassee, Fla. IU was outscored by 15 points in the first half. IU's previous low total in a half this year was 27 against Eastern Kentucky in the second half of the Nov. 26 game. "We missed a lot of opportunities early in the game," coach Kathi Bennett said. "Obviously, success early always helps. I feel that we get affected too easily when we're not playing well individually and that is what happened tonight."

IU's big men large in win

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The IU men's basketball team needed all its big men. Coach Mike Davis made that quite clear after Sunday's win against North Texas. In addition to senior forward Jeff Newton and freshman forward Sean Kline, junior center George Leach needed to get over his rotator cuff injury that kept him on the bench Sunday, and quick. Because if No. 10 IU was going to contend with No. 9 Maryland Tuesday night, the frontcourt had to be ready to play.

NCAA bid secured despite loss

·

Saturday's 3-1 loss to Illinois was potentially dire for the women's volleyball team. The loss placed them into a three-way tie with Northwestern and Michigan for sixth place in the Big Ten. All three teams stood at 10-10 in the conference with varying overall records. With only five to seven conference teams expected to make it into the bracket, a Hoosier post-season bid was in jeopardy.

IU on the road again

·

When the IU women's basketball team travels to Tallahassee for its game against Florida State, one thing will be on the players' minds: last year's game. The two teams met in Bloomington last season and the Seminoles claimed victory over the Hoosiers 62-61. It was a shot at the buzzer by Indiana native April Traylor that bumped the Seminoles up as the victors.

Revenge on their minds

·

No. 9 Maryland (3-0) is not the same team that beat the Hoosiers in the National Championship game last year, there's no arguing that. But as IU travels to Conseco Field House in Indianapolis tonight, senior forward Jeff Newton said vengeance will still be on their minds.

IU freezes Liberty University

IU picked up an important pair of non-conference victories over the holiday weekend, sweeping undefeated South East No. 4 Liberty University. IU got started nine minutes into the first period Friday. Sophomore forward David Ravensberg sent a pass between the skates of a Liberty defenseman and on the stick of junior forward Rhys Anderson. Anderson cut in front of the net and slammed home the first IU goal of the weekend.

NCAA tournament bid slips after falling to Illinois

·

Thanksgiving weekend was an eventful one for the women's volleyball team. They posted their first 20 win season since 1999. This season placed head coach Katie Weismiller as IU's most successful coach with 159 career wins, and placing IU squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 10-10 Big Ten record and 20-12 overall. Sitting at 10-9 in the Big Ten, the Nov. 30 match against Illinois was crucial for a guaranteed NCAA Tournament bid, but after the Hoosiers fell in four games their fate would be in the hands of the selection committee.

Coach celebrates 40th win at IU

·

In the 1970's, women's basketball was an entirely different ballgame. Head coach at the time, Bea Gorton was the fastest to reach the 40-win plateau in just 46 games. This weekend women's head coach Kathi Bennett became the second fastest coach to reach the 40-win plateau and accomplished the feat in 65 games. Bennett wasn't aware it was her 40th win Tuesday night in Alaska when the team defeated Eastern Kentucky 61-49. Some members on the team weren't surprised that Bennett had won 40 games so fast.

Women's sports still lack something

·

When he woke up on Nov. 21, Steve Hamilton, the athletics director at Hart Lakeshore Academy in suburban Detroit, was not happy. He had just seen his girls' basketball team lose its state tournament playoff opener to Walkerville High School. The loss couldn't have surprised Hamilton since the team hadn't won a game all season. But the score had him seeing red. 115-2. That's right, 115-2.

Hoosiers split tourney in Alaska

·

Playing in their second tournament in less than a week the IU women's basketball team split a pair of games at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Ala. The Hoosiers lost in the Championship game against Nevada 68-56 Nov. 27. A day earlier, IU defeated Eastern Kentucky 61-49. In the championship, sophomore guard Jenny DeMuth poured in 26 points and added seven rebounds, but it was not enough as IU suffered its first loss of the season. The Hoosiers fell to 3-1 on the year.

Team downs Irish in second round then falls to UConn

·

Heading into last Wednesday's second round NCAA Tournament match against Notre Dame, the IU men's soccer team was looking to avenge their last loss on their home turf at Bill Armstrong Stadium. While it was not a pretty game and in the words of Hoosier coach Jerry Yeagley it was not a good performance for IU offensively, the Hoosiers did advance with a 1-0 win over the Irish. No. 5 ranked, but unseeded IU (15-3-2) managed just 10 shots in the game and a meager three in the second half, but one of those three netted the lone goal of the game.

Team returns from Maui with goals accomplished

·

The IU men's basketball team traveled to the Maui Invitational last week with a couple of goals in mind. One was to win the tournament championship; the other was to prove that they had been underrated in the polls. The No. 20 Hoosiers flew back to the mainland Wednesday having accomplished those goals, with the Maui Invitational trophy in tow. It was the fourth time IU participated in the tournament, but the first time they won the championship.
