Clarett sues NFL over entry rule

NEW YORK -- Suspended Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett sued the NFL Tuesday, asking a judge to throw out a league rule preventing players from entering the draft until they have been out of high school for three years. Clarett, who rushed for 1,237 yards and led Ohio State to a national championship as a freshman last season, is not eligible for the draft until 2005 under current rules.

Runners find time for music

Two members of the IU men's cross country team, senior Chris Powers and junior Jeff Zeha, have joined IU senior Nathan Randall to form one of the most diverse bands on campus -- the Beatniks. The band plays music ranging anywhere from alternative to hard rock and have been compared to such bands as Sublime and AC/DC. Powers plays the drums, Zeha is on bass, and Randall is the singer/songwriter.

Roby's streak of bad luck continues

In IU's 33-3 win against Indiana State, junior wideout Courtney Roby had a long touchdown pass called back by a penalty. After the game, he said he'd have more opportunities. That's just what he got Saturday against Kentucky, but with the same results.

Soccer player runs toward goal in cross country

Most student-athletes participated in their respective collegiate sport in high school. However, sophomore cross country runner Kelly Siefker is one of the exceptions. In the state of Ohio, the women's high school soccer season takes place in the fall, coinciding with the women's cross country season. During this period, Siefker played soccer and never participated in cross country prior to coming to IU.

WUSA folds on eve of 2003 World Cup

Most of IU's women's soccer players will not continue to play after they graduate, but for a few, the next level awaits. The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) and the Women's World Cup have been the only places where women's soccer players could showcase their talents after college. However, the women's World Cup only happens every four years, and the WUSA recently folded due to insufficient funds to support a fourth season. Shaunna Daugherty, senior goalkeeper for the Hoosiers, said she is disappointed with what happened to the WUSA. "It's pretty unfortunate," she said. "The WUSA gave a lot of players an opportunity to play after college. Having the WUSA fold is a letdown for a lot of future players."

Decision has fans wondering

IU contains All-American in loss

Through the first quarter of Saturday's game against Kentucky, it looked like star Wildcat wideout Derek Abney was on his way to another offensively potent game. On Kentucky's third drive, the senior -- who came into the game third in Wildcat history in pass receptions -- caught one ball for a first down, took a reverse for 24 yards, and then split the IU defense for a 29-yard touchdown reception and the early lead.

Chances blown in loss

Before the season starts, IU's coaches scout their first four opponents. This year, Coach Gerry DiNardo circled the UConn and Kentucky games as 'big' since they promised to be closely contested. The Hoosiers already lost to UConn, and Saturday, IU's offense couldn't capitalize on two first quarter possessions starting near the 50-yard line and saw a tight 13-10 halftime deficit fall apart in the third quarter into a 34-17 Kentucky run away in front of 34,829 fans at Memorial Stadium. "We went into this week saying this was a big game, a big rivalry and an important game," DiNardo said. "We put a lot into it. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves as coaches and on the players. I think we played a little bit better than we did at Connecticut, and I would say that is the good news."

Team kicks off fall season at UM

The men's golf team kicks off its fall season this weekend with the Northern Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. hosted by the University of Michigan. The Hoosiers had three weeks to prepare for the two-day, 15-team event, and they are eager to finally get the season under way at the U of M golf course.

Conference play begins this weekend

The Hoosiers open the Big Ten play this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wisc., to take on the Badgers Friday night. Then they travel to Minneapolis on Sunday to face the Golden Gophers. After a good week of practice, Coach Mick Lyon said he's excited about beginning Big Ten play this weekend. Sophomore forward Kristen Zmijewski said the team is anticipating two tough games.

Fall debut to show preparation

The IU women's golf team will travel to East Lansing, Mich., this weekend for their first tournament of the year, the Mary Fossum Invitational. The first and second rounds begin Saturday at the Forest Akers West Golf Club, with the final round concluding on Sunday.

IU seeks third tourney win

This weekend the IU women's volleyball team will be hosting its second home tournament of the season, the IU Credit Union Invitational. This year marks the third time the Hoosiers (4-4) have hosted the event, and the team is a perfect 6-0 in the tournament's history, capturing the title on both occasions.

Regional rival Kentucky visits Memorial Stadium Saturday

In his second year at IU, coach Gerry DiNardo has yet to lead the football team to consecutive victories. But that could change when the Hoosiers play host to Kentucky 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium after beating Indiana State 33-3 last weekend. A win would secure bragging rights in one of IU's fiercest regional rivalries. "When coach DiNardo came in last year, he wasn't really sure about the rivalry," senior wide receiver Glenn Johnson said. "He didn't really know the meaning of it, but then when he saw how those guys played, he bought into it, and he saw where it was coming from, as far as it being a pretty intense game and you gotta go out and lay it all on the field against Kentucky."

Hoosiers head to Terre Haute

Today marks the 65th running of the Indiana Intercollegiates as the No. 18 women and No. 17 men's cross country teams travel to Terre Haute to compete on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. This is the same course that hosted the 2002 NCAA National Championship meet in which the women's team finished 14th.

Colts short of sellout

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are again racing against the clock to sell tickets. The team has until noon Thursday to avoid its fourth local television blackout in five games at the RCA Dome. Team officials said Wednesday that 6,200 tickets remained.
