Wings take down Blues, 4-3; Ducks outlast Blackhawks

ST. LOUIS -- Robert Lang had a goal and an assist, and Jason Williams had three assists to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a season-opening home-and-home sweep of the St. Louis Blues with a 4-3 victory Thursday night. Detroit, which beat the Blues 5-1 at home Wednesday night, could not have asked for a better opponent to open the season. Since 2002-03, Detroit is 11-1-1 against St. Louis.

IU heads to Michigan seeking 1st conference victory of season

The IU men's soccer team returns to Big Ten action this weekend at Michigan in search of its first conference victory of the season. After beginning the Big Ten campaign 0-1-1 with a loss to Penn State and a tie with Michigan State, the Hoosiers rebounded with a pair of non-conference wins against IU-Purdue University Indianapolis and the University of Louisville.

Homecoming 2005

In its last four games against Illinois, the IU football team managed only one win and averaged 16 points per game. This year, in front of a Homecoming crowd, the Hoosiers hope to overpower the Illini defense with their offense -- one that has averaged nearly 30 points a game.

IU rowing clinic session expands to 3 weeks

IU's rowing clinic expanded its session to three weeks this year to better prepare walk-ons and novices for the realities of life in America's oldest intercollegiate sport. "Last year we taught them how to row, but we didn't teach them what rowing was about," head coach Steve Peterson said. "There's a big difference, and we needed more time."

Hoosiers go for All-American title

California's state motto, "Eureka" is Greek for "I have found it." Three Hoosiers are attempting to find their games as they travel westward to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American. "All the girls going to the All-American played a lot of matches," said IU head coach Lin Loring, referring to the past weekend's Hoosier Classic. "They played well and should be prepared."

No clowning around; juggling club serious about 2005 season

When talking about juggling, the first thing that might come to mind is the circus. However, the participants in the IU Juggling Club are anything but clowns. The Juggling Club has been around since the early 1980s and is still trying to rid the association of the circus that goes along with juggling.

Rugby opens season strong, welcomes Slippery Rock

The IU rugby team suffered only its second loss of the season this weekend at the hands of the Indy Impalas. The loss dropped IU's record to 5-2, but team captain Hans Van Horn believed the Impalas proved to be a valuable experience for his team as it prepares for Slippery Rock University, coming to IU Oct. 8.

The IU men's golf team concluded the Big Ten/Pac Ten Challenge in Chicago yesterday, finishing 11th in a 14-team field with a three-round total of 886. Host team Northwestern won the tournament by netting an 860 and was followed in the top five by Minnesota; Arizona State University; University of California, Los Angeles; and Washington University.

Loukas nominated as 1 of 20 candidates for Olympic spot

In 2004, diver Sara Hildebrand gave IU its lone representation on the pinnacle athletic stage in the Athens Olympic games. Sophomore Christina Loukas hopes to partake in a local passing of the torch by representing IU in the 2008 games. Her first step toward that honor came last week when the Olympic Medal Program selected her to join 19 other distinguished divers for a chance to represent the United States in Beijing.

Feeling home on the road: Hayden ready for Louisville

When junior midfielder John Michael Hayden goes home for dates with his girlfriend, he always brings a soccer ball. That's because in Hayden's life, home is where the heart is, and his heart is tied to the sport of soccer. Even his girlfriend, Hollie Minogue, is a midfielder on the Louisville Cardinals women's soccer team.

Legendary coach Ditka speaks in Bloomington

IU's win streak ends after 2 Big Ten losses

The IU women's volleyball team abruptly ended its winning streak this weekend with losses to Ohio State and Penn State. The momentum that had been leading the Hoosiers fizzled Friday as they lost 30-26, 30-20 and 30-22 to the No. 18 Buckeyes and then 30-24, 30-10 and 30-18 to the No. 4 Nittany Lions Saturday. "Both games were tough losses for us this weekend," IU head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Each time we came out strong in the first set, but our passing and serving needed to be worked on."

3 Hoosiers reach final in Classic this weekend

For the second straight year, three Hoosiers on the women's tennis team have reached the finals of the top three brackets in the Hoosier Classic. This year, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan were able to cash in victories in the top two brackets against their Notre Dame opponents. With long baseline rallies, No. 82 Batty frustrated No. 54 Brook Buck from the very beginning as she cruised 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of the Flight A bracket.

Quirarte knows where he needs to be to lead

While finishing strong is crucial in any sport, sophomore Santiago Quirarte of the IU men's golf team has found out this season that how you start can be just as important. Quirarte's 73.67 scoring average is second on the team, yet it is clear Quirarte hasn't been getting off to the best starts so far this season. Quirarte averages 74.8 for his first and second rounds and 71.3 in his final rounds. And while head coach Mike Mayer tries to break in his talented freshman class early in the season, he looks for Quirarte to become a more consistent presence in tournaments.

Hardy 'receives' praise, shines in conference debut

MADISON, Wis. -- Before the start of the football season, most IU fans probably knew freshman wideout James Hardy as the basketball player who played football. With five touchdowns in his first four college football games and an unflappable sense of confidence, the 6'7" starter is quickly becoming the football player who also plays basketball.

IU finishes 8th at Loyola Lakefront Invite

The No. 19 men's cross country team competed in its final warm-up competition Saturday morning at Chicago's Loyola Lakefront Invitational. The Hoosiers again competed without senior All-Americans Sean and John Jefferson and Stephen Haas. Senior Eric Redman, IU's top finisher in its first two meets, also did not race.
