Legette-Jack becomes IU's 3rd coach in 3 years

Call it déjà vu. For the second year in a row, the IU women's basketball team is starting a new season with a new head coach. On April 19, Felisha Legette-Jack was named the new head coach of the Hoosiers, becoming the third person in a little more than 13 months to hold that position.

Felisha Legette-Jack has been on an emotional ride her entire life. Growing up in a single-parent home with her mother and two brothers, Legette-Jack -- the first-year coach of the IU women's basketball team -- looked to basketball in sixth grade as a way to break away from her shy demeanor. Her two brothers played basketball and convinced her to play. She turned out to be a natural.

A new start for junior college star Stemler

It didn't take long for Lance Stemler to figure out how to bring IU fans to their feet. At Hoosier Hysteria on Oct. 13, Stemler was introduced to the IU crowd -- the first time many had seen the junior college transfer -- with John Mellencamp's "Small Town" blaring in the background.

TAKEDOWN -- IU freshman Maurice Gunn (left) battles Eric Flinchum, a top-ranked wrestler of Cumberland College in the NAIA during Saturday's Hoosier Duals at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers finished the day 5-0 after defeating Cumberland, Oregon, Bucknell, Ohio and Appalachian State. IU will head to Primm, Nev. on Dec. 1 to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational.

IU finishes out 2006 with 19 straight losses

The IU women's volleyball team will end its losing streak this season at 19 games. It won't end because of a Hoosier victory though. It will end because there are no more games to play. The Hoosiers lost their last two games at home this weekend after being swept by No. 11 Wisconsin on Friday and No. 10 Minnesota on Saturday. The losses ended the Hoosiers' season and put the team in last place in the Big Ten at 1-19 with an overall record of 10-22. The wins helped boost both Wisconsin and Minnesota in their pushes for an NCAA Tournament bid.

Slow-starting Pacers fall to Raptors 92-83 Sunday

TORONTO -- Andrea Bargnani is starting to show why the Toronto Raptors took a chance on the soft-shooting Italian forward with the top pick in the draft. Chris Bosh had 17 points and 11 rebounds and four other Raptors reached double figures in scoring, and Toronto held on for a 92-83 victory against the slow-starting Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Bargnani had 14 points for the Raptors, who never trailed. Toronto outscored Indiana 32-17 in the first quarter and began the second quarter on a 14-2 run, including eight points from Bargnani.

Senior duo end year at Terre Haute meet

The IU women's cross country team officially finished its season at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 20. With only seniors Jessica Gall and Lindsay Hattendorf competing, the race marked the end of the two runners' Hoosier careers. However, the end result of the race wasn't as promising as the team had hoped as the two finished in 84th and 104th, respectively, at the 6K race in Terre Haute.

Hoosiers lose for 1st time of season at Thanksgiving tournament

After opening the season with its best start in six years, the IU women's basketball team suffered its first loss to the Miami Hurricanes this weekend. IU began the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament with a convincing 73-52 win against Wright State University. Four Hoosiers scored in double digits, including junior Nikki Smith, who led the team with 19 points. Despite shooting 48 percent from the field and 66 percent from beyond the arc, IU was unable to match the effort against the Hurricanes in the championship.

WEST LAFAYETTE -- IU senior safety Will Meyers ran off the field Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium as Purdue fans and players celebrated all around him and his Hoosier teammates. Playing in his last collegiate game, Meyers felt the emotions run through him -- disappointment, disbelief and anger. But most of all, he felt aggravation. "The tears hadn't really started yet. It was more frustration," Meyers said. "I just wanted to get off (the field) before anything worse happened." Meyers is one of 21 seniors who played their last game as Hoosiers on Saturday, a 28-19 loss against Purdue in West Lafayette.

No. 7-seed IU fails to advance in NCAA Tournament

It didn't rain Saturday night when Santa Clara University eliminated IU from the NCAA Tournament, but the sod on Jerry Yeagley Field was soggy nonetheless. After Bronco forward Jeff Cosgriff sent his game-winning penalty kick into the net, tears streamed down the faces of several Hoosiers and hit the yellow-tinged grass.

Colts dealt 1st loss of season

IRVING, Texas -- The Indianapolis Colts are perfect no more. And as flawed as the Dallas Cowboys are, they're starting to look like contenders again. Tony Romo managed an efficient game in his first career start at home, Marion Barber III ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and the Cowboys handed Peyton Manning and the Colts their first loss of the season 21-14 Sunday. A week after becoming the first team to start 9-0 in consecutive seasons, Indianapolis fell shy in its bid to match last year's 13-0 run, much less than the perfect season by the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

Sophomore Stockwell breaks own school mark

The IU women's swimming and diving team also hosted teams at the IU Open Invitational this weekend. Nine teams in total competed. The Hoosiers had a strong overall performance and were able to show off their depth. The highlight of the weekend was sophomore Sarah Stockwell's performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. Stockwell earned a first-place finish with a time of 1:03.02, eclipsing her previous school record time of 1:03.06.

Junior Roberts wins both diving events for men

The IU men's swimming and diving team hosted the 11th annual IU Open Invitational this weekend at Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. IU hosted the unscored meet, welcoming eight teams to compete in the swimming events, diving events or both.
