At 0-12 in the Big Ten, the IU softball team is off to its worst start in school history to begin conference play. Illinois (25-16, 5-5 Big Ten) and rival Purdue (31-16, 2-6) both swept the Hoosiers in a two-game series over the weekend.

Speaker addresses greek pride, life

A sea of greek letters faced Will Keim as he delivered a lecture Thursday night at Assembly Hall. Keim, a motivational speaker and alumnus of Delta Upsilon fraternity, addressed the members of IU's greek system about the pride and responsibility associated with fraternity and sorority life.

Students recognized for work

The IU Student Employment Office recognized student workers both on and off-campus last week with its annual Student Employment Awareness Week. The week was intended to increase public recognition of student employment by recognizing and thanking both students who work and their employers for providing them with job opportunities. Although Student Employment Awareness Week started about 15 years ago, it wasn't nationally recognized until 1990.

We want the folk

Folk music, despite what its detractors might have said in the past, has managed to survive, and Peter, Paul and Mary are among the proof of this. Their show at the IU Auditorium Friday night was an enjoyable experience on the whole, and showed that even after 40-odd years, folk music still can draw a crowd.

'Parade' well worth your time

I must admit, I am probably not the person to write a thoughtful, unbiased review of "Parade." Why, you might ask? Because I adore the show with every fiber of my being. I love it. I love the way the music gets under your skin and brings goose bumps to the surface. I love the message and the passion that went into the storytelling. The show is so wonderful because it is so real. So obviously there is no way I could not recommend this, the final production of the Department of Theatre and Drama's 2001-2002 season.

Powell in Israel to meet Sharon

JERUSALEM -- Secretary of State Colin Powell challenged Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's limited withdrawal of troops from Palestinian areas Thursday, saying President Bush "wants to see more progress." On his way here, Powell said the pace of the Israeli pullback from West Bank cities and villages would be part of a "very long conversation" he would have with Sharon Friday. Powell talked with the Israeli prime minister by telephone Thursday.

Students protest for Palestine

Students for the Justice of Palestine held a protest march and candle light vigil Thursday in front of the Monroe County court house. The SJP held the march and ceremony in protest of the recent Israeli incursions into Palestinian territories and to end the violence and Israeli occupation. Amin Hussein a Palestinian from Al-bireh, a suburb of Ramallah, explained the importance of the protest.

Hoosiers return home

The No. 36 IU women's tennis team returns to Bloomington this weekend to take on Penn State and Ohio State. The Hoosiers face the Nittany Lions Saturday and the Buckeyes Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be held at the Indiana tennis complex.

Going for first Big Ten win

Having split both of its doubleheaders this week, the IU softball team goes into this weekend's competition against Illinois and Purdue in search of its first win in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers head to Illinois (23-16, 3-5 Big Ten) tonight for a 6 p.m. game. IU (11-21-1, 0-8) and the Illini will also battle at noon Saturday in Champaign, Ill. The Hoosiers then travel to West Lafayette to take on rival Purdue (29-15, 0-6) in a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday.
