British troops lead new sweep in Afghanistan

BAGRAM, Afghanistan -- British troops are leading a force of 1,000 allied troops in a major new sweep in a mountainous region of southeastern Afghanistan that is thought to have been a key al-Qaida base, the British military said Thursday.

Multiple firings are untimely

The Athletic Department under Director of Athletics Michael McNeely fired three IU head coaches Tuesday. The Athletic Department said in a press release the decision was based on the team's performance over the past few years. Women's soccer coach Joe Kelley, men's swimming and diving coach Kris Kirchner and softball coach Diane Stephenson were released, but the timing was wrong for this to happen.

Dismal job market awaits Indiana grads

INDIANAPOLIS -- As companies cut back on entry-level hires, this year's crop of more than 56,000 Indiana college graduates will likely have fewer job offers than any class since 1994. Indiana campus placement offices report that hiring is down 20 percent to 45 percent at some schools.

Delta Lambda Phi denied recognition

Delta Lambda Phi, a fraternity working to become an active member of the greek system, was denied colonization status last week. Catering to the gay, bisexual and progressive male population on campus, the fraternity is open to males of any sexual orientation. So far, the fraternity has already recruited 14 members for the colony, which is seeking official IU recognition.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The job outlook for the 1,350 University of Texas-Arlington graduates in May is less monumental than in recent years, but jobs are still plentiful in many sectors, according to recent surveys.

Jill's House receives donation

Future patients at Jill's House will be able to enjoy an entertainment center at the outpatient residence because of the generosity and dedication of this semester's Business X333: Integrating Business class. Catalyst, a charity concert event hosted April 5 by the X333 class, raised approximately $4,300 in donations for Jill's House, said Peg Howard, president of Jill's House.

Authorities probe casino shootout

LAUGHLIN, Nev. -- Thousands of bikers rumbled out of town Sunday as investigators sorted out the details of a casino brawl between rival motorcycle gangs that left three people dead. Dozens of extra police patrolled the streets to guard against possible gang retaliation at one of the nation's largest motorcycle festivals.

Hoosiers take third at Eastern Championship

Regulation wasn't enough time to determine the Hoosiers' fate. Neither was four overtimes. It took a fifth and final overtime Saturday to decide who would move on the the Eastern Championships title game. And the team that moved on was Michigan. The rival Wolverines won 8-7 victory, and IU ended up taking third at the Eastern Championships with a victory over Princeton this past weekend.

Weekend goes well despite inclement weather

The men's and women's track and field teams completed the first of several big weekends to come in the next month. This weekend's meets were marred with such bad weather at West Lafayette that the Boilermaker Open was cancelled after only a few events.

Michigan defeats team

The men's tennis team wanted to avenge its recent 5-2 loss to Michigan at the Big Ten tournament hosted by Ohio State. But the 11th-seeded Hoosiers were beaten 4-2 by the sixth-seeded Wolverines.
