Fog inundates Bloomington

·

It's a modern phenomenon in America to want to categorize everything. All things must have their own specific niche, whether it is for marketing purposes or just for our own state of mind. Those things that go against traditions or blend trends beyond easy recognition must be forced to go it alone.

McConaughey, Bale fuel 'Fire'

·

I liked "Reign of Fire." I'll just get that out of the way now. I had a good old-fashioned, stuff-catchin' on fire fun time. And that's really the extent of it. The trick of enjoying a movie like "Reign of Fire" is to know exactly what you are in for. You're not going to see "Jaws" or "Lord of the Rings," but you're not going to see "Anaconda" either.

Album can't quite recreate live feeling

The Indy Jazz Fest featured a variety of acts from straight ahead, bop-oriented jazz to smooth jazz, blues and even more modern sounding sub-genres. But one of my favorite bands happened to be the Latin, Afro-Cuban rhythms of Conga Jazz.

'Halloween' in July?

·

Jamie Lee Curtis is back once again for the eighth installment of the "Halloween" franchise, but only for a brief while. Michael Myers is as relentless as a Rolling Stones tour manager. It turns out that Laurie Strode (Curtis) had decapitated the wrong guy in a mask in the last episode. Kind of like when you walk into the wrong classroom on the first day of school. So we can all relate, right?

'Hard Candy' a sweet treat for summer

·

Admittedly, about a month ago, when I first heard "American Girls" on the radio I got a little worried. Don't get me wrong; it was nice to hear new material from Counting Crows. I thought the tune was catchy, but the first few times I heard it the words glossy and commercial came to mind. My prior experience provided hope. I reminded myself that as a general rule, the first single released by Counting Crows is never a great barometer for the rest of an album, and I couldn't have been more right.

Hanks guns for a third Oscar in 'Perdition'

·

Many critics have compared Sam Mendes' sophomore directorial effort to Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather," and while both films revolve around the world of organized crime the similarities stop there. "Road to Perdition" is a mafia film, but first and foremost it's a tale of fathers and sons.

'Hart's War' a losing battle

·

In Hollywood's post Sept. 11 patriotic fervor, there was a literal invasion of War movies. Luckily, most moviegoers took a pass on "Hart's War," a dangerously flawed film. This Bruce Willis driven tank hits tons of landmines from start to finish.

Cube's 'Darkness' insane

·

The Gamecube is unfortunately saddled with the image of being a "kiddies console." Nintendo has proved with "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" that there is more to the system than Italian plumbers and Pokémon. This challenging and innovative title pushes the boundaries of gaming in twisted new directions.

U.S. coach wants to stay through 2006

·

NEW YORK -- Bruce Arena probably will stay on as U.S. soccer coach after leading the team to its most successful World Cup performance in 72 years. Arena, speaking Wednesday at a news conference to promote Major League Soccer's All-Star game, was reticent to discuss his future. His current contract, agreed to in October 1998, expires at the end of this year. "U.S. Soccer has talked to me and, hopefully, we can reach an agreement," Arena said.

American Taliban agrees to sentence

·

The plea bargain the government struck with John Walker Lindh will ensure U.S. investigators have unfettered access to the young American who fought with the Taliban as they try to learn more about the inner workings of al-Qaida.
