WASHINGTON -- It will be the daunting task of President Bush's new Office of Homeland Security to ensure terrorists can't take advantage of the nation's ease of movement to carry out attacks. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, the head of the new agency, will be "sitting at the right hand of the president," a senior Bush administration official said Thursday.

Season ticket money stolen

The IU athletic ticket office reported that $2,300 from students purchasing basketball tickets had been stolen from its office earlier this month, according to the IU Police Department.

DiFranco fans ready for IU show

For folk rocker Ani DiFranco, music is a way of making sense of the universe. "My little songs are sort of letters to myself," DiFranco told Music Connection. I'm trying to clue myself in on some things. It's all a very self-conscious process on some level. My music, I guess, is what I live through." DiFranco will perform at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the IU Auditorium. Union Board is sponsoring the event.

Alternate use for new funds

Saturday, IU Parking Operations found new homes for about 250 abandoned student bikes. After the bikes were left unclaimed for months, those still on campus last semester and during the summer were auctioned to the highest bidder.

IUSA Supreme Court justice resigns, indicates 'failures'

Aquila's resignation, which was submitted to student body president Jake Oakman and Chief Justice Robert Cioffi, a senior, is in response to recent actions of the Court. In a press release Aquila said he is resigning because by remaining on the court he is "complicit in its actions."

Area activist to relocate before trial

Alleged ecoterrorist Frank Ambrose has packed his bags for Detroit. Authorities have accused Ambrose, a vocal area environmentalist, of driving 10-inch nails into trees set aside for logging in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest last June. The FBI said Ambrose, 26, is the first individual arrested in connection with the Earth Liberation Front, an ecoterrorist group.

Hoosiers victorious in opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- George Leach didn't want to sit the bench. He didn't want to wear the white practice jersey that denotes the second team. After Sunday's eight-point, seven-rebound, four-block performance in IU's 65-61 season-opening victory at Charlotte, Leach decreased the chance either will happen again. "I called my mom (before the game), and she said 'You know you can play basketball, so calm down,'" said Leach, who graduated from Charlotte's Olympic High School. "I just did what I thought I could do. I figured while I was in there, I might as well try something."

The men's tennis team defeated Iowa Saturday to pick up its first conference victory of the season and their first overall win in the last four matches. "We needed this match," coach Ken Hydinger said. "We came in 0-2 in the conference and now are 1-2, so we have a chance to earn our way out of a hole." But climbing from the hole did not come easily for the Hoosiers.

A common goal

It was with great interest that I read Gov. Frank O'Bannon's speech concerning the fiscal situation of Indiana Thursday. What he outlined in that speech will have a profound impact on the students of IU. O'Bannon, while having the best of intentions, is mistaken in freezing spending on universities. I believe it is imperative that the student body take a proactive approach and work with the administration to write, call, rally and lobby the state legislature to ensure that university funding is a priority for the state.

Bill targets right objective

State Sen. Michael Young is teaming up with state Representative Mark Kruzan to push a bill through the Indiana General Assembly that would tighten the laws for drinking and driving. This bill is a good idea. With the proposed plan, it would become a Class D felony if you were caught driving under the influence of alcohol with someone under the age of 18 in your car. You would lose your license permanently if convicted of causing a death while over the legal limit or for a third offense. Probationary licenses would not be granted if a driver is convicted of driving under the influence a second time or if the offender is operating the vehicle with a blood-alcohol content of .15 or higher.
