Top salary could attract next leader

IU's next president would be the highest paid in the Big Ten, making twice that of former president Myles Brand, if the University's board of trustees follows a consultant's advice. But IU will consider more than that in setting the new president's salary, said Stephen Ferguson, chairman of the presidential search committee and vice president of the IU board of trustees.

College board seeks boost in funding for Pell grants

WASHINGTON - The College Board, the folks who administer the SAT, wants the federal government to boost Pell Grant funding enough to cover the average cost of tuition, fees, room and board for a student attending a four-year public school.

Kmart closing 326 stores

DETROIT -- Kmart Corp. announced its biggest round of cutbacks yet Tuesday, saying it will close 326 more stores and eliminate 37,000 more jobs in hopes of getting out of bankruptcy by the end of April.

SLIS dean latest to resign

IU School of Library and Information Sciences Dean Blaise Cronin announced in a statement Tuesday that he will resign after this semester to take a year-long sabbatical and return as a faculty member.

IU to share in the pain

Hoosiers can look for Indiana's depressed economy to rebound -- if Gov. Frank O'Bannon fulfills his promises. The governor gave his seventh State of the State address Tuesday, which focused on improving Indiana's lagging economy. "Mark this day because today is the beginning of a revitalized economy in Indiana, one in which our citizens can find and keep jobs that provide a living wage," he said. An elevated economy won't be the only hike in Indiana -- college tuition could rise, as well.

Local comic hits shelves

"Hoosier Rascals," IU's very own comic strip, will soon jump from the pages of the Indiana Daily Student to the bookshelves. The comics, written by seniors Victor Neff and Alan Garelick, have been compiled into a book to be sold at T.I.S. and the IU Bookstore soon.

Hoosier

Freshman Kari Stevenson moved to Indiana in 1996, but she refuses to consider herself a Hoosier. In her mind, the word conjures up countless negative images. "A Hoosier implies a low level of education, perhaps not even completion of high school, let alone college," Stevenson said. "I would be insulted to be referred to as a Hoosier." Although some people like Stevenson despise the negative connotations of "Hoosier," since the 1830s Indiana residents have adopted the nickname for themselves. As IU's nickname/pseudo-mascot, "Hoosier" has stirred up numerous debates throughout history. The word holds the key to both aggravation and enthrallment. A myriad of myths surround the origin of the bizarre word. From legends to linguistics, historians have struggled to decipher the expression.

Co-op gallery features locals

The heart of the Bloomington Playwrights Project building isn't related to theater. Instead, the lobby houses the Bellevue Gallery, a co-op exhibit space for Bloomington area artists. "In this town, there are very few places to get work shown," said Betty Sander, Gallery treasurer. "It's a bunch of artists who want to show their work."

IU hosts Wildcats

After the No.18 Hoosiers (11-3, 1-1 Big Ten) dropped their third loss in six games against Ohio State Saturday night, the frustration of the team was obvious. IU got off to one of its best starts in recent memory this season with an 8-0 record and No. 6 ranking headed into winter break. But since then the offense has sputtered and coach Mike Davis, as well as other members of the team, have questioned the squad's passion. "You think about this game (and) you look at the mistakes we made in this game and they're mistakes we've been making all year long," senior guard Kyle Hornsby said after losing to OSU. "I don't know what's different about this game that's going to make us learn from them but hopefully we will and we'll come out and do better in the next few games."

Feds investigate plane crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A jammed tail assembly may be to blame for the commuter airline crash that killed 21 people at Charlotte/ Douglas International Airport, a federal investigator said. A possible malfunction of the Air Midwest plane's elevator, a flap on the tail used to control a plane's angle of climb or descent, would have hampered the pilot's efforts to control the aircraft.

US Rep. Hill decides against run for governor

INDIANAPOLIS -- U.S. Rep. Baron Hill said Tuesday that he would not run for governor in 2004, becoming the sixth big-name Democrat to decline a bid in the past six weeks. State Democratic Party Chairman Peter Manous and other leading Indiana Democrats had been encouraging Hill to run.
