'War Stories' a haunting memoir

·

War Stories: a Memoir of Nigeria and Biafra, a collection of stories about the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970, is a poignant look at the war that divided a nation and pulled on the heartstrings of the rest of the world. The author, John Sherman, was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Eastern region of Nigeria before the civil war broke out. After hurriedly fleeing Nigeria, he returned to work with the starving children of Nigeria and Biafra, the seceding area of Nigeria. As an International Committee of the Red Cross volunteer, Sherman helped distribute food and medicine to the severely malnourished children caught in the conflict. He tried to re-enter the area he taught in, but it was impossible to enter Biafra during the fighting. Instead, Sherman volunteered to help the children of Nigeria recover from a severe malnutrition disorder called 'kwashiorkor.'

After hot fall start, IU gets back into swing

·

The hottest team on the IU campus last fall might have been the women's golf team. The only thing that could have cooled the squad off was the three month break due to winter. The team finished the fall season with a sweep at the Mission Inn Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., winning the team competition and the first, second and third individual finishes. IU toppled the 17-team field while junior Karen Dennison won her third medalist title of the fall.

Candidate debate set for tonight

·

The IU Student Association presidential debate is designed to aid students in their decision to vote. Unfortunately, few students unaffiliated with the tickets ever watch it, making the annual event more of a mass rally for IUSA members and ticket candidates than a political event.

Hoosiers win first ever Big Ten title

·

At last year's Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, all that separated the Hoosiers from a Big Ten title was the loss of the last event in a disqualification.
