Nathan Amundson begins his second album with an unaccompanied repitition of the line, "There's an evil in this room." This quote solidifies his place in the camp of indie singer/songwriters made possible by Nick Drake. All of them, without fail, cannot conjure up the demons as effectively or write as interesting skeletal song structures as the legendary, dead Brit. Nate Amundson is no exception, but like the similar sounding Damien Jurado, Will Oldham or Elliott Smith he has talent, a lot of it.

'Wrong Turn' has few right moves

As if the world needed another reason to be terrified of inbred hillbilly psychos, Hollywood gives us "Wrong Turn." Flowing strongly in the vein of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "House of 1000 Corpses" and "Deliver-ance," it's the touching tale of a group of privileged, pretty youngsters stranded in the middle of nowhere, subject to the warpath of freaky mountain men who for no apparent reason like to cut up campers.

Ocanada, give us your electronica

Maybe it's because he's from Canada, but Dan Snaith's mix of electronica-rock seems surprisingly uncorporate. While other dance/electronic vibes leave me feeling souless with a stomach full of Fast Food nationality or otherwise like a modern American, Snaith's blend of loose, textured percussion and sunglow melodies leaves something for the uncool to grasp onto.

Bunny Wailer overshadowed by former bandmates

Bnny Wailer is perhaps an overlooked legend, a reggae icon who sometimes gets pushed to the side when the conversation turns to more well-known artists (and former Wailers bandmates) like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Bunny Wailer -- often called Jah B -- helped produce two immortal Wailers albums (Catch a Fire and Burnin') before setting out on his own, at first as a solo artist with Island Records, then with his own label, Jamaica-based Solomonic. Since then, he has earned three Grammys and the adulation of world-music fans across the globe.

Verbena's not in Nirvana anymore

A lot of forgettable bands have imitated Nirvana since 1991 from Bush to Puddle of Mudd to any number of anonymous bands that had a hit or two and then went away. Nobody, however, imitated Nirvana like Verbena.

Officers face uncertainty during stops Traffic Stops

According to a recent report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation --called the Uniform Crime Report -- roughly 55 percent of police officer in-the-line-of-duty deaths stem from traffic stops going bad. This statistic makes traffic stops one of the most dangerous facets of police work.

Biology chair named

Extension cords represent sperm. New biology department chair Elizabeth Raff explains that the plug represents a human sperm tail, while the impressive tangle of orange cord piled near her feet is, at equivalent scale to the plug, the length of the sperm tail of the species of fruit fly that she studies. Despite her acceptance of the chair position, Raff said she remains a passionate scientist who is completely at home in her lab discussing the intricacies and scientific advantages of studying such long tails.

Former student awaits trial for Internet sex charges

Last fall, Galen Baughman was on his way to attaining his dream of becoming a professional singer. Today he sits in a detention center in Arlington County, Va., awaiting a trial that could decide his fate. The former IU student, who was charged in April in a White Plains City Court in Westchester, N.Y., with five counts of soliciting sex with a minor over the Internet and attempted dissemination of indecent materials to minors, has now been charged with similar violations in his home state of Virginia.

Committee to consider smoking ban

On Nov. 1, 1993, a new non-smoking policy went into effect making IU buildings entirely smoke-free. The policy has been in effect for 10 years, but now a committee has been formed to consider revising it. The consideration is to amend the current policy by prohibiting smoking around doorways, windows and ventilation systems. The task force, co-chaired by Assistant Vice President of Human Resources Dan Rives and Dean of Students Richard McKaig, will meet Friday.

'Making a difference'

Bloomington schools may be out for the summer, but children from low income housing are still receiving free meals. The annual breakfast program sponsored by Community Kitchen of Monroe County, Inc. began Monday, which also coincides with National Hunger Awareness Day. The program, now in its sixth year, provides breakfast to children in low income housing units who are on federal school meal programs and are without school breakfast and lunch during the summer months.

Baxter to expand operations

Baxter Pharmaceutical Solutions, a driving economic force in the Bloomington community since its 2001 acquisition of Cook Group, announced plans Wednesday to enlarge its local facility through investments exceeding $100 million. The 120,000-sq. ft. expansion will foster the growth of more than 700 new jobs at the biomedical manufacturing plant.
