Team heads to Texas for first test of year

This weekend, the women's swimming and diving team will be traveling to Dallas, Texas, to face off in the SMU Classic. This is the first time in the five-year tenure of IU coach Doris Tierney that the swim team will head to Dallas for the competition. Tierney is prepping the team to its fullest potential for every meet, and this one is no different.

Play combines humor and music

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" is a bit of an anomaly among pieces for the stage. It is a musical, but it is also a revue in another sense, and a character study of one man's opinions and beliefs in another sense. The production opens tonight at the at 8 p.m. and plays nightly through Nov. 1 except Sunday with matinees Saturdays at 2 p.m at the Wells-Metz Theatre. In a show without a linear plot or discernible characters, one must ask: What is the focus of this 'musical'? The answer is ideas.

Wanted: loving homes the window

Collars rattling and tails wagging are common themes lately at the local Bloomington Animal Shelter. Celebrated annually, "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month is currently taking place with the aid of the Monroe County Humane Association and PETsMART. A sprightly basset hound nudging plastic chew toys, an inquisitive beagle stretching for affection and a scruffy collie spaniel named Houdini are among many of the dogs available for adoption.

IU kicked off its One for Diversity fundraiser with a formal celebration in Alumni Hall Thursday night. IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm, who created the initiative, said it was great to finally see the program get on its feet after a year of work. "It's very exciting. It's wonderful that the students are taking the first big step," Brehm said. "We've been working on it in various ways since 2002, and this is the first big kickoff."

We're all geeks

In his book, "Lucky Wander Boy," D.B. Weiss says that a geek is someone who "loves something more than the fear and respect and desire of his fellow men and women." Geeks see the beauty in that which they obsess over. Get them talking about their passions and they will give you a perspective that you could never conceive. And the most beautiful part is that we're all geeks.

3 new nations elected to U.N. Security Council UNITED NATIONS -- Algeria, Brazil and the Philippines were elected to seats on the U.N. Security Council Thursday for two-year terms along with Romania and Benin. The five candidates won the support of more than 170 nations in voting by the 191-member General Assembly. Five other nations were chosen last year for terms expiring in 2004.

Indiana Mountain Bike Festival comes to area this weekend

Biking enthusiasts will come together Saturday and Sunday for the second annual Southern Indiana Mountain Bike Festival. The event will be held at Valley Branch Retreat in Nashville, Ind. Over 1,000 people are expected to attend the event over the two-day period. Attendees will be able to test the 2004 models of mountain bikes from a variety of vendors, including Gary Fisher Bikes and Trek Bikes.

What would the Jewish God do?

During my freshmen year at IU, my synagogue sent out care packages to all of its new college freshmen. In that package was a guide book that was supposed to help us retain our Jewish identities while at school. I don't remember much from the book, but I do remember a section that was entitled, "Top Five Reasons You Should Marry a Jewish Person." One of the reasons was, "Because you know it's the right thing to do." From Jesus fish to WWJD to worried backlashes such as the one in my Jewish handbook, it seems that organized religion has moved closer and closer to the surface and further and further away from spirituality and good living.

Music school finally in tune

It seems the music school has finally acknowledged that it's time to change the locks and begin a new era in instrument security. They've been publicly ridiculed and bashed for their lack of swiftness in preventing more thefts, but they're doing it now and that's an important step.

The article entitled "Clerk hopeful criticizes party" (IDS, Oct. 23) really should have read "Clerk hopeful criticizes both parties." Though I certainly criticized my own party for playing petty politics, I am also deeply troubled by the threats of litigation from the Democratic Party.
