Quoting scripture not enough

This letter is a suggestion to conservative evangelicals who intend on making their case against homosexuality. In this age of vague ethical boundaries, it's just not convincing to assert your own moral standards as the sole underlying principle in defending your position for most of today's social issues.

T.I.S. wants bursar billing. On the surface, it makes sense. IU Bookstore has it, so having bursar billing would move T.I.S. up to the level of IU Bookstore competition-wise. But just below that, in reality, we have to say it: Give us a break.

Ivan hits Gulf Coast, Florida

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Hurricane Ivan slammed into the Gulf Coast early Thursday with 130 mph winds, launching tornadoes, washing out a major bridge and hurling metal signs through the night. At least 18 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm, but officials said the toll and the damage could have been even worse.

Perlman opens IU concert season

London music critic Andrew Porter wrote in The New Yorker that experiencing violinist Itzhak Perlman in performance is experiencing "everything one wants a violin sound to be." The late veteran musician Isaac Stern once described Perlman's talent as "utterly limitless." In 2003, upon granting the Kennedy Center Honor to Perlman, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said "the world falls in love with music when Itzhak Perlman takes up his violin" It's no surprise then that Doug Booher, director of the IU Auditorium, anxiously awaits Perlman's 8 p.m. performance Saturday at the IU Auditorium.

Latino Fest hits Bloomington

The IU Festival Latino is coming to Bloomington this weekend in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at La Casa Latino Cultural Center, 715 E. Seventh St. The event will feature authentic food and music as well as the 2004 Mini-Soccer Tournament, in which four local teams will be competing.

Weekend festival offers taste of Mongolia

Traditional and contemporary Mongolian music, traditional wrestling, contortionists, religious talks, food and various arts and crafts will be part of the Mongolian Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hosted by the Tibetan Culture Center, the festival will take place during the same weekend as the Lotus Festival, which TCC Director Jigme Norbu hopes will increase Mongolian Festival attendance.

Former African-American Studies chair blasts department, dismissal

This fall the interim chair for the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, Dr. Valerie Grim, became the third person to fill the position in three years. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kumble R. Subbaswamy hired Dr. John Stanfield to chair the department in 2002. A week before the 2003 fall semester, Subbaswamy named Professor Michael McGerr interim chair. Grim took over responsibilities as interim chair Aug. 1.

The Dorkestra reunites tonight

What do you call it when a guitar player, a bass player and a classically trained fiddle player mix together in New York? The Dorkestra. This year's Lotus Festival will see the 10-year reunion of The Dorkestra, a unique-sounding band that will be playing at the Bloomington Convention Center from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Friday and then again at Second Story from 10:45 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

UITS sells alternative to long-distance phone calls

But in a campus where cell phones seem like a school supply staple, people might wonder why UITS started selling phone cards.

Trustees consider hotel

The IU Board of Trustees is looking at purchasing a 278-room University Place Hotel at IU-Purdue University-Indianapolis for $17.5 million and then renovating the facility for an additional $12 million. The hotel was built in 1987 by a private company and the conference center, a part of the hotel, was built by IU. The facilities of the hotel have not been renovated in eight years, and the occupancy rates have dropped to below 55 percent. IUPUI Vice Chancellor for administration and finance Robert Martin said it is the right time to acquire the hotel especially because IU already owns the conference center and the current owners want to sell.

IUPD warns of Web scams

IU students that find a deal too good to be true may have to watch out: it could be a scam. A variety of scams on-campus, off-campus and online continue to hatch in an effort to take chunks out of students' wallets. IUPD statistics indicate since 1993, the IU Police Department has investigated 98 fraud cases totaling $118,000 in loses. The number of cases involving students is probably much higher, as many are put under the category of theft, IUPD Detective Greg McClure said. In addition, IUPD only investigates cases that happen on-campus; off-campus fraud is not included in the numbers.

Union Board to show 9-11 film

Nearly two weeks before the presidential elections, Indiana Memorial Union's Whittenberger Auditorium will play what is largely seen as an anti-Republican film. "Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11 Fear and the Selling of American Empire" will be shown free for students at 7 p.m., Oct. 22. Some might think this could elicit protests from Republicans on campus, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Bloomington parents, children anticipate new school opening

Unless they've been avoiding their windows and backyards since last February, local residents of Bloomington's southwest side would've been surprised to see a new school being built, literally, in their backyard. Houses located off Tapp Road in Bloomington, range from a half mile to just 10 feet away from the construction site of the soon-to-be Summit Elementary at 1450 Countryside Ln.

Jewish students to celebrate Rosh Hashanah at Hillel

Sunset marks the start of the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Services and traditional meals are being arranged tonight by the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center for Jewish to aid students in observing the holiday. The Hillel Center is providing several opportunities for Jewish students to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. At 5:30 p.m., Hillel will hold a Rosh Hashanah dinner at their center building as well as in McNutt Quad.

Networking Web site expands to IU

Taking the Web-savvy campus by storm, www.thefacebook.com, a social networking Web site created for college students, recently added IU to its list of participating schools. The site, started by Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg in February, began as a networking system for students at Harvard to meet friends, friends of friends, and so on.

Team spirit alive in locker room

Some athletes can find pregame inspiration in a pair of socks, a ritualistic mix of songs or some other good luck charm. However, for most Hoosier football players, their inspiration comes from a "higher" source - religion. For some Hoosier football players, spirituality plays a large part in their life - both on and off the field. While some express their commitment through personal prayers, the IU team holds a voluntary gameday chapel session for those in need of metaphysical boost.
