IU senior runs for charity

Senior Adam Jacobs stands no more than 5 feet 8 inches tall and his sinewy build suggests he weighs little more than 130 pounds. Despite a small stature, he may be the epitome of the power of one. This past summer, Jacobs kicked off an individual project he calls "Race to Protect Human Rights." The philanthropic endeavor involves running the Philadelphia Marathon Nov. 20 and, in the mean time, raising money for Human Rights Watch -- the largest non-profit human rights organization in the United States.

Casey Cox: 'I tell my friends I'm a trustee who also happens to be a student'

When Casey Cox heard the news he was IU's new student trustee, the first thing he did was buy a fiberglass IU license plate and attach it to the back of his beat-up white pickup truck. He is on his second pair of cowboy boots in nine months because he wore out the first. "People ask me, 'Are you from Texas?'" Cox said. "'Nope. Indiana.' And I leave it at that."

Dr. William Cast: 'It is a chance to give back what the school has given me'

Dr. William Cast spent 40 years serving the community. He saved lives on the operating table, gave time to his country as a surgeon during the Vietnam War and helped found a major hospital and a K-12 school. Now Cast has been asked to serve again. A resident of Fort Wayne, he was appointed this July by Gov. Mitch Daniels to the nine-member IU board of trustees to fulfill a three-year term. "My name was put up, and I was asked if I would serve," Cast said. "And I told them I would be delighted to serve. It is a chance to give back what the school has given me: an education and a profession."

Intense rivalry

Screaming fans are waving signs, blowing air horns and shaking milk jugs filled with any noise--making material they could find. Fans who bleed purple line one side of the arena while a sea of people dressed in maroon and gold covers the other side. Not a seat goes unfilled and a piece of tissue paper wouldn't fit between any two fans who came hours early just to get a seat. The noise is deafening and it's nearly impossible to move, but each half of the crowd is so intent on the game and rooting for its beloved team that no one notices.

Student groups begin Katrina fund-raising

The IU student body is reaching out to victims of Hurricane Katrina, with more than 30 student organizations helping to launch a massive fund-raising campaign today. "I'm excited about the fact that it was a big effort from a lot of groups and the goal is to raise a lot of money," said Union Board President Keith Johnson. "I think it shows we have a heart and we do care." Leading the way is a Katrina Relief wristband sale, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the national Red Cross.

Common Council calls for creation of redistricting commission

Outraged calls of "blatant partisanship" arose after the Bloomington Common Council announced the creation of a new commission on voter redistricting. The wrath toward the project came from Monroe County Democratic Party Chairman Dan Combs after the August announcement, and has continued since. Republican County Commissioner Herbert Kilmer contends the committee was created "to more fairly and completely comply with Indiana state law." The committee will recommend redistricting only at the county council and county commissioners' districts. It will then make a recommendation to the county commissioners, who can either amend the recommendation or create their own district map.

11 disabled children found in cages in Ohio; caretakers deny neglect

WAKEMAN, Ohio -- Sheriff's deputies found 11 children locked in cages less than 3 1/2 feet high inside a home, but a couple denied they had abused or neglected the children. A judge on Monday put the children -- who range in age from 1 to 14 and who have various disabilities, including autism -- in foster homes.

Hopeful to become a Hoosier

Cinderella stories are great. The stories of Rudy, the Hickory Huskies and the 1980 USA hockey team give every "ordinary Joe" a chance to believe. They prove the theory that anything is possible. Cinderella stories can even happen at IU. Whether it was the 1968 Rose Bowl team or even the recent 2000 Final Four team, miracles can happen.

Drunks interrupt dreams

One weekend, I was roused from my slumber by the sound of loud voices and a ground-shaking bass line. After a moment of fumbling for my glasses, I glanced at the clock: 3:37 a.m. Peering through the window, I found a handful of inebriated students surrounding a car, which was parked frighteningly close to mine, with the doors wide open and the stereo system blaring. They were singing off-key at the top of their lungs to a dreadful country song and yelling at one another for cigarettes.

Timberwolves sign Wright

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed former IU guard Bracey Wright Monday, the Associated Press reports. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound guard will be looked to fill the void of former sharpshooter Fred Hoiberg, who the wolves released this summer under the amnesty clause. The 10-year veteran underwent successful heart surgery and is still recovering.

After Katrina, family calls Indiana temporary home

Campus icon retains history, myth from 1868

IU students Otto Klopsch and Mathilde Zwicker met for the first time beside the sun dial near Maxwell Hall sometime in the early 1890s. Before the century was over, the two campus sweethearts were married and their meeting spot became a part of IU's lore. Though the numbers on the dial are worn down and its time has been distorted over the years, the dial, built in 1868, still exists as a central point to that and other campus traditions and stories.

Student alleges sexual assault in Wright Quad

Tuesday, Sept. 13,2005 1:10 a.m.

A female student reported she had been raped in a Wright Quad dorm room early Sunday morning. The IU Police Department was contacted about 11 p.m. Sunday and was informed that the student was admitted to Bloomington Hospital, said Sgt. Leslie Slone. Evidence of a possible assault was gathered at the hospital.

Red Sox topple Blue Jays thanks to another Ortiz game-winning hit

TORONTO -- David Ortiz hit two home runs, including a drive in the 11th inning that gave the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Monday night. Manny Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox, who recovered after wasting a 5-0 lead and moved 3 1/2 games ahead of the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

False rape reporting case dropped

The student who recanted a report of being raped at the IU-Purdue men's basketball game in February avoided charges for false informing of a crime. Sophomore Mary Bray pleaded guilty Thursday to a class C misdemeanor for illegal consumption of alcohol. The charges cited for false informing were dropped as a result of the plea agreement.

Bonds is back, nearly homers

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds is just a foot or two shy of his old sluggin' self. In his season debut for San Francisco, Bonds strode to the plate Monday night and tipped his batting helmet to the roaring, flashbulb-popping crowd, worked a 3-2 count and lined a double to left-center that fell just shy of clearing the wall.

11th place in South Bend

The IU women's golf team started its 2005 campaign with an impressive showing this past weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend. The Hoosiers tied for 11th place in a 17-team field, but there was plenty of excitement, most notably from senior Shannon Johnson. Johnson, who fired seven over par 223 (72-76-75), earned co-medalist honors at the event.

Living with a guilty mind

Mens rea" is Latin for "guilty mind," and I'm convinced it's ideal for the name of my weekly column. In a criminal trial, prosecutors generally have to prove defendants committed the "actus reus," or guilty act, and that they did so with the required mens rea, or guilty state of mind.

Imitating a Saint

It couldn't happen. Hell -- no one could even ask for it to happen. After everything the New Orleans Saints had gone through, they couldn't be expected to win their opening game of the season, not after what Hurricane Katrina had done to their city. Oh yeah, and facing a Super Bowl-caliber team in the Carolina Panthers wasn't supposed to help either. But as we all watched the game or flipped to our box scores in the newspapers yesterday, there it was -- Saints 23, Panthers 20.
