Papa's novel shows a writer 'On the Verge'

·

Life after college graduation in three words: "On the Verge." As the title of Ariella Papa's debut novel, this phrase perfectly describes the future of most recent graduates -- waiting for something, about to get the big break, but not quite there.

Worst summer for fests

·

VAIL, Colo. -- It has been a midsummer's nightmare for arts festivals across the country because of visa restrictions imposed to tighten security after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Festival coordinators have had to find replacement performers at the last minute for top artists who have been denied entry, including performers at the recent Vail Valley International Dance Festival and the Lincoln Center Festival in New York City.

More mixed messages

·

Last September, IU Bloomington was named by Time magazine as its College of the Year among research universities, based on the comprehensive programs we have developed to help students make the academic and social transition to college life. We were proud of the honor. The media, for the most part, yawned. Move forward a bit less than a year. Last Monday morning, the phones began to ring at our media relations offices, and kept ringing. IU has been "honored" again. The Princeton Review -- no, it is not affiliated with Princeton University -- had declared that IUB is the nation's No. 1 party school.

Moving in means growing up

·

A mere 12 months ago I was waving goodbye to my parents from my fifth floor window in Read Hall. My only memories of my move-in include a lot of people, a lot of boxes, a lot of heat and a lot of stairs.

Dance monkey, dance

The captain on the last flight I took told all the passengers that he hopes he'll see us all again on our next ATA vacation. I didn't even know what color pants he was wearing.

Lounge Life

·

As another school year rolls around at IU, the annual move-in chaos and confusion into the dormitories includes another complication. Thirty to 40 students will be spending their first days on campus living in a lounge.

Barely Moving

·

The road to freedom was clogged Wednesday as incoming freshmen funneled down into one lane on Highway 37 -- a closure which turned out to be an effective filtration system into IU. "Traffic just stopped for 15 minutes," said freshman parent, Rick Matillo. "It took us 45 minutes to really get moving but once we cleared Martinsville, it was a cakewalk."

Wanted: Fans

·

There is nothing better than football Saturdays in the fall. Except if you go to IU. Because here, the parking lots are half-full, people who bother to tailgate rarely bother to go watch the game and a two-sided stadium is unnecessary because the fans could fit on one side. Well, except when we play other Big Ten schools. Their fans actually bother to make road trips.

Parking regulations cut out violators

·

With thousands of people venturing back to Bloomington this fall, finding a parking spot may prove to be a difficult task. The City of Bloomington parking enforcement operations has a program to ensure residents the ability to obtain permits to park in their neighborhoods between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ordinance is intended to protect pedestrians, motorists and cyclists from heavy traffic resulting from competing for parking spaces.
