Multiple trustees OK

The Indiana House approved House Bill 351, which would add a non-voting faculty representative and increase (from three to four) the number of Monroe County residents who can sit on the IU Board of Trustees. The bill has passed the Senate, but still has to pass a joint conference committee before arriving on Governor Frank O'Bannon's desk.

Buckeyes riding high before Saturday showdown at home

·

Ohio State Head coach Jim O'Brien wouldn't say that he is surprised to be tied with IU at the top of the Big Ten standings. But going into tomorrow's showdown with the Hoosiers at Value City Arena in Columbus with the conference lead on the line, O'Brien said he is happy with what his team has done so far.

Reform should add education

·

In 1996, President Clinton passed sweeping changes to the U.S. welfare system. Critics who were outraged by the changes have fallen silent as about 30 percent of the welfare recipients have moved from welfare rolls to a payroll. Now that the welfare system is up for reform, George W. Bush is adding a personal touch -- one that includes a push from welfare to work that shoves people right past the schoolhouse door.

Habitat House: Built of love

·

It's snowing. Twenty volunteers bundled up in winter coats and hats are trudging through a muddy lawn, hauling and hammering boards. It's windy. Plywood walls anchored together with nails and sturdy two-by-four boards are being anchored together in what will soon be a house. Early Saturday morning, IU students and Bloomington residents are braving the elements to work on a Habitat for Humanity house.

Independents Rule Race

·

The 52nd running of the men's Little 500 came and went in the tradition of past years without emphasis on the controversy that led up to the race. Saturday The Corleones won the race with speed, humor, and an almost two-lap lead over the majority of the competition.

Three-headed monster solves MSU's Taylor

·

INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Dane Fife submitted his request to guard Michigan State's Marcus Taylor early this week. Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament in Conseco Fieldhouse, he got his wish. Then split the duties three ways. Fife, with help from junior Tom Coverdale and freshman Donald Perry, hounded Taylor, the Big Ten's leading scorer and top assist man, all afternoon as No. 21 and fourth-seeded IU (20-10) won 67-56 over the fifth-seeded Spartans (19-11). Taylor scored a game-high 20 points but was just 8 of 18 from the field and committed six turnovers with only two assists.

·

Police arrested 11 students and two nonstudents late last week on drug-related charges at two residence halls, a fraternity and two off-campus locations. Spearheaded by IU Police Department Officer Dave Hannum, who was assisted by a team of about 30 officers from the IU and Bloomington police departments, the sting culminated three months of undercover work by the South Central Indiana Drug Task Force.

Reddick and Wilson top conference

·

IU has one of the best triple jumpers in the Big Ten in Hassan Reddick. The junior finished second in both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten Championships and earned a provisional to the NCAA championship last season. This season, Reddick has improved but faces stiffer competition. Fellow teammate freshman Aarik Wilson could possibly be the toughest he finds. "This year the Big Ten is probably the best it has ever been in the triple jump, but these two should vie for the Big Ten championship," coach Marshall Goss said.

'Requiem for a Dream': a stark reality

·

A friend told me that I had to see "Requiem for a Dream." I didn't know what to expect, only that "it will disturb you." So, I was naturally intrigued last fall when I saw that it was playing at Showplace 11 in Bloomington. I saw it, and without a doubt, it was the most disturbing experience I have ever had at a movie.

The enemy within

·

I think there are some people out there who are just inherently evil," my co-worker said. Last June, on the eve of Timothy McVeigh's execution, a co-worker and I talked about the nature of evil. We tried to fathom how a man could murder 168 people and injure 500 others.
