A new space era

These days it takes a lot for me to be inspired by a newspaper headline. I generally sit down with a paper and scowl at the pages as they go by. I can't believe that it's only mid-June and there is already a tiring barrage of news from the Bush-Kerry election trail. Even more dismaying is the media hype surrounding the release of Bill Clinton's autobiography, "My Life." I find it sad that these petty, pathetic talking heads are whom we are supposed to look to for hope, inspiration and leadership.

Bars shouldn't sue minors

The Indiana Court of Appeals recently ruled in favor of the Millennium Club Inc., declaring that bars could sue minors for damanages and although public policy places the burden on bar owners, "we also recognize the competing public policy that the minors should be held accountable for their actions."

No use for a name?

From now on, you may be prosecuted for refusing to tell a police officer your name. That was the verdict handed down in a narrow 5-4 decision from the Supreme Court Monday in the case of Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada. Nevada law requires any person stopped by the police under reasonable circumstances to "identify himself" if asked. Larry Dudley Hiibel was approached by a Nevada police officer investigating a report of an assault, but Hiibel, after being repeatedly asked to identify himself, refused.

No more blind eyes

One of the purest luxuries of living in a free society is the ability to criticize. Censuring fringe groups, impugning extremists or renouncing those who step outside the mainstream with actions so heinous it slurs the group as a whole, must occur to retain the moral high ground. Criticism is a mechanism that is commonly used to separate the populace from the radicals. But unfortunately such criticism can be lost among overwrought investments in authority and the protection of power structures. Catholic bishops, for example, were far too slow to condemn the actions of abusive priests.

Panel details al-Qaida ties to Iran, Pakistan

WASHINGTON -- The chairman of the Sept. 11 commission said Sunday that al-Qaida had much more interaction with Iran and Pakistan than it did with Iraq, underscoring a controversy over the Bush administration's insistence that there was collaboration between the terrorist organization and Saddam Hussein.

World-class culture

The 2004 Summer Music Festival, IU's School of Music's summer season, began Sunday and is scheduled to bring international musicians to Bloomington to perform first-rate music in a wide variety of concerts through August 14. "This year there will be students from Japan, Mexico, Switzerland and France and teachers coming in from France, Sweden and Wyoming," said professor Mimi Zweig.

Saudi police hunt down extremists

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Police in armored vehicles and a helicopter closed off three Riyadh neighborhoods in a pre-dawn search Sunday for Islamic extremists and for the body of the American hostage beheaded by al-Qaida. Saudi Arabia's interior minister, Prince Nayef, vowed Friday the government will eradicate terrorism in the kingdom, where the slaying of Paul M. Johnson Jr. was the latest in a campaign of attacks on Westerners.

Fake ID ruling met with mixed reaction

IU students and Bloomington bar managers have varying opinions about a recent Indiana Court of Appeals ruling that decided a South Bend bar could sue underage drinkers. Indiana Excise Police found more than 200 minors in the Boat Club bar during a raid in January 2003. The Millennium Club Inc., which owns the bar, sued each of the individuals in damages. The underage drinkers were mainly students of University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College.

Iraq's prime minister announces major reorganization of forces

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's interim prime minister announced a restructuring of the country's security forces Sunday, grouping all Iraqi troops under a central command whose chief duty is tackling insurgents plaguing the country. Prime Minister Iyad Allawi also said his government was considering imposing "martial law" in Iraq's trouble spots to help police and paramilitaries bring order.

India, Pakistan to create hotline to lower risk of nuclear flare-up NEW DELHI, INDIA -- India and Pakistan announced Sunday that they would establish a new hotline between their foreign ministries to alert each other of potential nuclear risks. In a joint statement after two days of talks, the South Asian rivals said the hotline would help "prevent misunderstandings and reduce risks relevant to nuclear issues."

IPFW asks state budget committee for more funds

FORT WAYNE -- Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne is making a pitch for more state tax dollars to the State Budget Committee. The committee met at the campus and toured it Friday, hearing administrators request more state funding, including $30 million for an expansion of its student union.

BEIJING -- Rushing down a narrow street, the taxi driver flew past rows of Vegas-like restaurants, rundown marketplaces and towering hotels. After nearly running over 18 bicyclists, he made a U-turn and proceeded to go the wrong way on a one-way street. He skidded to a stop in front of my temporary home, Beijing's Changan Hotel. Handing him 20 yuan, I tried to communicate the extra money was a tip. He nodded gratefully and whispered, "Xie xie," which means thank you. As I stepped out of the taxi, three men on bikes parked beside the car and stared.

Listening during class might change student's outlook on events I have never attended a class taught by professor Abdulkader Sinno, but based on the article published ("Student's complaint stirs controversy," June 17), I feel confident that I can tell which students are giving the most accurate version of his lecture.

European leaders agree on constitution

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Getting agreement on its first constitution took three years of wrangling. Now the European Union may face an even tougher fight in selling the charter on the streets and in the parliaments of Europe amid growing skepticism about the wisdom of more integration. The historic deal, reached Friday night after two days of contentious talks, now must be ratified by each of the 25 member nations either by referendum or parliamentary vote -- and reaction in some countries suggested just how hard the pitch will be.

President Ronald Reagan was laid to rest last week after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer's disease. I must admit Reagan was not my favorite president. His administration's policies have had a devastating effect on workers, the indigent and, ironically, the mentally ill.

Annual Fun Frolic comes to stadium parking lot Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana will sponsor the annual Fun Frolic in the IU parking lot west of the Memorial Stadium this week. The Fun Frolic, which began Friday, has been a Bloomington tradition since 1957. The carnival atmosphere will feature rides, games and traditional carnival food.

'Ivan the Terrible' takes Dark Alley

Last weekend, Bloomington Playwrights Project premiered "Ivan the Terrible," the last of this season's Dark Alley Series plays, on its Lori Shiner Studio stage. Written by local resident Marta Jasicki, "Ivan the Terrible" is a short, hopeful and comedic drama. Located only a few blocks from Kirkwood Avenue, on Washington Street, BPP's Dark Alley Late Night shows have been the home of some of Bloomington's more cutting-edge risqué plays.
