PAPAL ELECTION: Process to elect new pope set in motion

·

VATICAN CITY -- The death of Pope John Paul II triggered a carefully scripted ritual that will culminate in the election of a new leader for the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics. Rome's church bells tolled in mourning. Vatican flags were lowered to half staff. Heavy chains blocked the door of the papal palace to signify the interregnum has begun.

Hoosiers struggle in opener against MSU

·

After a grueling early season schedule, the IU softball team played its first Big Ten games of the season this weekend, losing twice to Michigan State. In less than favorable weather conditions, the Hoosiers (10-24 overall, 0-2 in conference) took the field Friday afternoon with junior pitcher Megan Roark on the mound.

Errors plentiful in 2 losses

·

The IU baseball team's first weekend of Big Ten play was highlighted by diving catches, home runs, errors and heavy winds. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, not many of these worked in their favor. IU kicked off a four-game series against the Northwestern Wildcats Saturday and began the Big Ten season with a victory. IU coach Bob Morgan said he was pleased with his team's performance but knew the Hoosiers had their work cut out for them.

No. 2 Wildcats deal IU loss; Hoosiers respond with upset

·

This weekend's results weren't surprising for the Hoosiers in Bloomington, but the way the results played out might have been, as IU fell to No. 2 Northwestern but upended No. 35 Wisconsin. The biggest match for No. 36 IU (10-8, 4-1 Big Ten) was its second match, Sunday's 5-2 win over the Badgers (10-5, 4-1).

Naming the library after Wells was easily approved.

Nation's top guards to match up tonight

·

ST. LOUIS -- Deron Williams began learning his basketball skills in grade school, playing for a coach who constantly preached defense and sharing the ball. Even though he was by far the most talented member of his team, Williams wasn't allowed to dominate simply by scoring.

Weather, injuries slow team down

·

Technical difficulties, fluctuating weather and an injured roster did not provide IU with the greatest conditions for the second annual Indiana Relays, but the show went on anyway in Bloomington.

Wilson leads IU again in relays win

·

The men's track team barely escaped the 2nd annual Indiana Relays, held at IU's home track, with a three point win over Army, 153-150. The meet offered athletes solid competition in their hunt for regional qualifying marks. IU will host one of the NCAA Regional meets the last weekend in May.

Hoosiers extend streak to 6 straight wins

·

The IU men's tennis team did something this weekend it had failed to do all season long -- it won on the road. The Hoosiers snapped out of their spring road-match rut with emphasis over the weekend, winning twice away from home in two close matches at Northwestern and Wisconsin -- extending their win streak to six straight.

Squad sent ashore in dangerous weather

·

It was as if Poseidon had been snubbed by one of the crews and was unleashing his wrath. Furious gusts and fierce rain turned Cincinnati's Lake Harsha into a turbulent swirl unsafe for rowing. It is the first time an IU race was canceled due to foul weather.

History buff David Pace studies student learning

·

Everyone has had it happen: You sit in class trying to grasp a concept, yet for some reason it simply will not click. Maybe the professor's intelligence level prevents him or her from explaining it well, or maybe the subject matter is so difficult that it is too much to take in all at once.

If I'm wrong, blame my mom

·

So despite all the upsets, despite all the madness and after all has been said and done, the nation's undisputed top two teams will meet tonight with the national championship on the line. Tonight's title bout portrays the classic contrast of style versus substance, glamour versus grit and all the other cliché sports jargon you can think of.

Illinois vs. North Carolina: NCAA' s latest 1-2 punch

·

ST. LOUIS -- It's been 30 years since the top two teams in The Associated Press poll met in college basketball's national championship game. No matter what happens Monday night when top-ranked Illinois faces North Carolina, it won't affect the sport the way the last 1-2 title match-up did. No. 1 UCLA beat Kentucky 92-85 that night in San Diego to give John Wooden his 10th national championship in his final game.
