4 IU professors named Guggenheim fellows Composer Don Freund, historian Michael Grossberg and biologists Lynda Delph and Jeffrey Palmer were all elected as Guggenheim fellows, bringing IU's total to 117. Since 1998, at least one IU faculty member has earned a Guggenheim fellowship and has more total fellows than all other state institutions combined.

Twins beat White Sox 5-2 Sunday MINNEAPOLIS -- Johan Santana made sure the Minnesota Twins' first losing streak of the season didn't last too long. After watching teammates Kyle Lohse and Brad Radke get roughed up in consecutive losses to the Chicago White Sox, Santana stopped the skid with 11 strikeouts in seven innings to help Minnesota avoid getting swept by its division rivals with a 5-2 victory Sunday night.

Road Trip Nation to visit IU campus Wednesday

In 2001, a neon green RV lumbered down the highway with the words, "What's your road, man?" painted on its side. The RV crossed the country, stopping in San Francisco, Boulder, Colo., Austin, Texas and other not-so-famous cities.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Tiger Woods is the Masters champion once again, turning back a surprising challenge Sunday with a shot of sheer magic and a birdie putt to win a playoff he never expected. A spectacular finish of birdies and bogeys finally ended when Woods produced the most important shot of all -- a 15-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to capture his fourth green jacket and finally put away the gritty Chris DiMarco.

Pershing rifles take 2nd place competition

The sound of boots and the buttstock of weapons hitting the drill pad resounded during IU's first hosting of the National Pershing Rifle competition Saturday in Assembly Hall. Twenty-three Pershing rifle teams gathered in Assembly Hall to compete for top honors as the best Pershing Rifle company in the land.

Hoosiers extend spring preseason winning streak to 3

Before the start of the spring soccer season, IU coach Mike Freitag said redshirt freshman Kevin Noschang was one of the emerging players from the class of 2008. In the team's first two games, Noschang had three goals and he scored his fourth in the team's 2-0 win over St. Louis Friday night.

Neville takes 2 victories at Pepsi Invite

Competing without its top distance runners, who will debut next weekend, IU finished third in its first trip to the Pepsi Team Invitational with Oregon capturing first. Sophomore All-American David Neville offered IU's best performance, sweeping the 200 and 400-meter dashes. After posting an NCAA Regional qualifier in the 200 meters last weekend, Neville got his 400-meter qualifier in a narrow 46.20 second victory.

IU sweeps Illinois for 1st Big Ten wins

After struggling last weekend against Michigan State and losing a heartbreaker to Louisville Wednesday, the IU softball team traveled to Illinois and Iowa this weekend for four conference games. The Hoosiers wasted no time turning things around, beating the Illini 4-3 Friday evening.

Mike Davis has been frustrated over the past few seasons as he struggles to find players who can comprehend and execute his system. Davis is a system coach, and believe it or not, that offensive system that fans groan and moan about can work and has. However, Davis -- a system coach -- needs system players. It has become apparent some of his players simply haven't caught on.

Loan program aims to lure key teachers to urban schools

Statehouse bomb threat creates minor disturbance INDIANAPOLIS -- A Rushville man arrested for threatening to bomb the Statehouse never posed a serious threat to state government, an Indiana State Police spokesman said Sunday. Local police found two crude bombs in the trunk of a car belonging to Randal A. Robbins on Saturday, and state police explosives experts safely detonated them later, 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said.

Senate Republicans reject proposal to use gambling funds for education

INDIANAPOLIS -- Republicans who control the Senate rejected Democrat proposals Friday to put devices similar to slot machines at Indiana's two racetracks to help funnel more money toward public schools. Among other proposals to boost education funding, Democrats suggested splitting 5,000 pull-tab slot machines operated by the Hoosier Lottery between racetracks in Anderson and Shelby County.

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- An undersea earthquake that hit Sunday near the Indonesian island of Sumatra sent people fleeing from their homes in panic, but the temblor was not strong enough to generate a tsunami, seismologists and meteorologists said.

Pakistan official kidnapped in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The family of a Pakistani embassy employee kidnapped in Baghdad appealed Sunday for his captors to release him, and al-Qaida's ally in Iraq claimed to have kidnapped and killed a senior police official. The kidnappings came as Iraq's most feared terrorist organization issued an Internet statement rejecting any efforts by the new government to make peace.
