Student dies in single-car accident

Jared Shears, a junior from LaFontaine, Ind.. died Friday in a single-car collision on Old State Road 15. The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department received a call about the accident at 1:58 a.m. Friday morning and responded to the scene.

Monroe County Fair offers new rides, food, entertainment

The Monroe County Fair has been a tradition for more than 100 years, and Saturday marks this year’s opening day. This eight-day event takes place from noon to 10 p.m. July 24-31 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds, located at 5700 W. Airport Rd.


Campus Bus Service sets ridership record

IU’s Campus Bus Service set a new milestone in rider participation this fiscal year, which ended June 30, by transporting nearly 3.5 million passengers. This record beat the previous years’ by nearly 200,000 passengers, a 10.9 percent increase during the past year. It also makes IU’s bus system the third-most used in Indiana, after Indianapolis and Lafayette.

Leary to face up to 3 years behind bars

Former Indiana guard Todd Leary averaged 5.4 points, 1.9 assists and 1.3 rebounds per contest and booked a career average of .460 shooting from beyond the arc while he donned the cream and crimson from 1989 to 1994. He can now add two more stats to his list of accomplishments: at least 18 months of jail and his 18th felony charge.

Award-winning writer and teacher Philip Gambone visited Boxcar Books on Friday night, an event sponsored by BloomingOUT on WFHB and IU GLBT Support Services. Gambone read the introduction of his most recent book, and participants of various sexual orientations joined in a question-and-answer session following the reading.

IUSA plans to set funding guidelines

IU students contribute more than $400,000 each year in mandatory fees to support student-led initiatives around campus. Given that amount of money, IUSA has decided to propose a new guideline for accountable funding and more transparency in the allocation process.
