Hoosiers drop back-to-back matches during weekend

The IU volleyball squad went into this weekend's home matches against Northwestern and Illinois looking to halt a seven-match losing streak. Instead, the Hoosiers dropped both matches to their Big Ten opponents and extended their skid to nine. The Hoosiers lost to the Wildcats three games to one Friday night, then were defeated by the Fighting Illini by the same margin Saturday night in University Gym.

Hoosiers lose battle against rival Spartans

For the first time this season, the No. 13 Hoosiers lost consecutive games. Coming off a similar 1-0 loss to the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines at home, the IU women's field hockey team traveled to the Great Lake state this weekend and was defeated 1-0 again by its Big Ten rival, the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans (6-11, 1-4 Big Ten), who came into the game without a Big Ten win, were able to beat the Hoosiers thanks to the Spartans' Ashley Pernicano, who scored on a tip-in in the 24th minute of play.

No. 9 IU loses to Penn State, unbeaten streak snaps at 8

The IU men's soccer team fell to conference rival Penn State for the third straight time in Fox Soccer Channel's Game of the Week Friday night. The Nittany Lions needed a lone goal in the first two minutes of the game to snap the No. 9 Hoosiers' eight-game unbeaten streak, defeating them 1-0. Although the Hoosiers out-shot the Nittany Lions 9-5, the cream and crimson were unable to get the tying goal.

IU to compete in prestigious regatta

The coxswain and top eight rowers of the IU women's crew team will travel to Boston this weekend to race in the prominent Head of the Charles regatta. Sunday will be the second time that an IU boat has ever raced in the event in its 42-year history, and the Hoosiers intend to make their mark.

IU searches for momentum after loss

Following its 1-0 loss last Sunday to Northwestern, the IU women's soccer team was down but not out. "Everyone's working pretty hard and trying to get back," freshman midfielder Christie Kotynski said. "We know we probably could have done better on Sunday. We're trying to work as hard as we can to make up for it this weekend."

IU places 8th in New Mexico Tournament

The Hoosiers' luck ran out as the cream and crimson recorded a season worst, placing eighth at the Price's "Give 'Em Five Fund" New Mexico State Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. IU coach Clint Wallman was disappointed with the finish but said he will not allow it to get his team down. "We have the talent to compete in any tournament," Wallman said. "Yet, despite a good week of practice, we did not play as well as we would have liked."

Peterson plans to play again for Oklahoma

Adrian Peterson plans to play at least one more game for Oklahoma. The star tailback, speaking publicly for the first time since breaking his collarbone Saturday, said he intends to play in a bowl game if the Sooners reach the postseason.

Dying for a title? Company making team pride urns, caskets

Quarterback racks up weekly honors

Following his career-best performance in Saturday's 31-28 upset of No. 15 Iowa, IU freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis took home his first conference and national honors. The Big Ten named Lewis Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter for their performances. Also, USA Today named the Hoosier quarterback its Player of the Week.

Bears lose defensive starter

Chicago Bears strong safety Mike Brown is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his right foot Wednesday, a major hit for the NFL's second-ranked defense. Brown limped off the field and was taken from the sideline on a cart during the fourth quarter of Monday's 24-23 comeback victory at Arizona after his foot got twisted on a running play. "Severe blow," coach Lovie Smith said. "I think we all know what Mike means to our football team. He's a special player. He was having an outstanding game ... That's a big blow, but injuries do happen. Mike has been in this situation before."

Freshman returns to practice

IU men's soccer freshman forward Darren Yeagle practiced with the team Tuesday and is medically cleared to play, the team's spokeswoman Brooke Frederickson said. Tuesday's practice was the first time Yeagle participated in physical activity with the team since IU's 2-1 victory against Michigan State on Oct. 1.
