A recent investigation by an Indianapolis television news station concerning a suspected al Qaeda operative with Bloomington ties has sparked local concern, leading area Islamic leaders to call for a "more informed analysis" of terrorist threats. Predictable Third Eye Blind album hits shelves

·

How on earth do you follow up two platinum albums? Wait four years between records? Four years is a lifetime in today's music fan attention span. Third Eye Blind decided to make us wait anyway. Was it even worth the wait? Probably so. Out of the Vein picks up right where the previous records left off.

Power duo gets it right the first time

·

Vocalist and guitarist VV can spin you from raspy Chrissie Hynde-sexy to the sweetness of self-endearment in six steps. Alison Mosshart (VV's real name) knows how to spill over with just a bit of self-destruction to make punk rock interesting, while avoiding the chick-rock stereotypes and your dreams of black leather and silk stockings.

British Folk for the faint of heart

·

Over the years, Richard Thompson would have managed to stand out as one of the greatest folk rockers in history... if only it were possible for non-American folk-rockers to really stand out. As usual, Thompson's three-pronged attack of equally raw and brilliant guitar playing, song-writing and vocals can be counted on.

Alkaline Trio is 'Good' at 'Mourning'

·

Alkaline Trio's horror-based notions are based in their two favorite colors: black and a very bloody crimson. I could say they eat other punk bands for lunch, but I don't want to give them any ideas.

Dork hip-hop from the West coast

·

El-P's label Definitive Jux is fastly becoming the place to find the best current hip-hop acts. Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, El-P himself and now Murs have released tremendous albums for the label in the past three years. Murs, who has been on the scene since 1993, makes his solo debut and quickly projects himself as dually learned and as an outsider. In his captivating tale of street terror in L.A., "The Night Before," he begins by saying, "I'm-a lend my speech to all within my reach to tell what really goes on, from the cells to the streets."

Debut record to topple the critics

·

Dan, Karen O, Brian Chase and Nick Zinner are so spunky. They're good enough to become the new rumored darlings on the critics list, chasing the strings and stocks of the White Stripes and such, while bad enough to earn the glamour of Tipper's Parental Advisory. This is the band you've been hearing about. And as one famed local record store owner says, "the album's almost good enough to live up to all the hype."

Annika-ching! It's all about the money

I remember Kim, a girl in my sixth grade social studies class, challenging me to an arm-wrestling match. Apparently, she didn't find my elbow-to-the-ribs humor to be too gentle.
