Elitism on the dance floor

·

The new addition to the student dance policy will require all attendees to present a college or university ID at the door for all dances held in major on-campus venues ("College IDs to be required at dances," Oct. 28). The Student Activities Office insists that the change to standard security measures has nothing to do with the incident following the Alpha Phi Alpha dance Sept. 17, when gun shots were heard outside the Indiana Memorial Union. But we don't buy it; policies don't change on a whim.

Pumpkin launch offers unique recycling method

·

Certain Bloomington residents won't be throwing away the moldy, bug-ridden pumpkins sitting on their front porches -- they'll be flinging them through the air at the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center. On Saturday, contestants will bring four pumpkins that weigh a minimum of five pounds each that they are willing to part company with when Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department holds its fifth annual "Great Bloomington Pumpkin Launch" at noon Friday.

IU Art Museum adds gift shop, café

·

Museums are meant for nothing more than standing and viewing art. Right? Wrong. On Tuesday, the IU Art Museum expanded the concept of what can be done at a museum by opening Angles, a gift shop combined with a café. David Tanner, the Art Museum's associate director for administration, explained the move was made to strengthen the Art Museum's role in the IU educational community.

'Chicks with Dicks' explores tough side of women

·

You won't hear a peep out of the chicks, but you might hear a scream, catcall, whistle, moan or groan tonight and throughout the month, claims the Bloomington Playwrights' Project. "Chicks with Dicks," written by Trista Baldwin and directed by Richard Perez, is billed by the BPP as a tongue-in-cheek B-movie-like play with a nuclear twist chronicling two rival biker-girl gangs that includes kung-fu fighting, hardcore hair-pulling, mud wrestling and leather bustiers. The play premiered at the Empty Space Theatre in Seattle, and the show ran for one year at the Planet Earth Theatre in Phoenix.

Angered faculty members rally against Herbert

·

IU President Adam Herbert's decision to restart the search for a Bloomington campus chancellor has created a divide between him and many professors, prompting dissenting faculty members to voice their concerns in letters to Herbert and organize a meeting to discuss "leadership issues at IU." The public clash could bring into the spotlight the growing division between Herbert, who is in his third year of his presidency, and University faculty who strongly believe in the idea of faculty governance. Shockers for the ages

·

Halloween has passed, but it's never a bad time to take in a truly terrifying film. With Hollywood now preferring slick, poorly-scripted, startle-packed horror fare over genuine terror and cinematic craftsmanship, it's essential to mine the past for serious scares. Below are my humble picks for the 11 scariest films readily available on DVD.

Hoosiers welcome Akron tonight for Senior Night

·

IU coach Mike Freitag and his three seniors are so focused on tonight's match with No. 1 University of Akron, they said they pretty much forgot about another important event -- Senior Night. Not only will fans be treated to the team ranked No. 1 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, but this could be the last time Hoosier fans see seniors Mike Ambersley, Jordan Chirico and Brian Plotkin put on their uniforms and play on Yeagley Field.

How can this be music?

·

Let me tell you something about the Fiery Furnaces: they're really creative and have the potential to write genre-inventing, era-defining music if they would just slow the hell down. Their hooks are phenomenal; their ear for instrumentation (and the wide variety of instruments they use effectively) is impressive. They just don't seem to have enough confidence in their melodies, because they abandon them just about every 30 seconds.

Send this 'bird' away

·

1965 was known as "the year of folk rock." Bands and artists like The Byrds, The Mamas and the Papas and Bob Dylan defined the year. But this era wasn't crowned complete until December of 1965, with the release of The Beatles' Rubber Soul. A couple months short of 40 years later, we get This Bird Has Flown, a tribute album featuring artists such as The Donnas, Dar Williams, Ben Harper, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Kweller, Ben Lee, the Cowboy Junkies and others.

Trading metal for melody

·

Sometimes, less is more. It may not be appropriate, though, when being loud is your thing. Following the surprising success of 2003's The Artist in the Ambulance, Thrice returns with Vheissu, their fifth full-length release, a far cry from their previous outputs. The band's post-hardcore throttle is only evident on about half of the album's 11 tracks, the others yielding to a softer, more melodic side.

'Drifting' into a difficult listen

·

Watersphere is the debut major label release from Pilotdrift, an eclectic band hailing from Texarkana, a city on the East Texas border with Arkansas. Pilotdrift is the musical creation of five friends: Kelly Carr (lead vocals, piano, acoustic guitar), Jay Budzilowski (bass), Ben Rice (drums), Eric Russell (electronics, guitar) and John David Blagg (electric guitar). Pilotdrift's sound is an interesting array of styles ranging from electronica to rock to jazz fusion to orchestra inspired instrumentals.

Adrift between folk, pop and drugs

·

I'll be the first to admit that, despite the hype, I couldn't warm up to Animal Collective's 2004 critical slam-dunk and breakout record Sung Tongs. As off-time and smirking as other 2004 darlings (i.e. the Fiery Furnaces) it was over-caffeinated, overly quirky and obnoxious. Still, just as it was a personal concession for me to admit that the 2004 Fiery Furnaces EP was pretty damn good, I have no choice but to admit the positives of Feels. It's a solid recording, albeit extremely off-kilter.

Bobtown, Ind.-- The night clung to the group assembled in front of the metal farm gate, draping across their shoulders and sneaking up under their coats, making them feel the need to whisper.
