JetBlue terminal at JFK airport begins to return to normal 6 days after storm

NEW YORK – The six-day siege of angry and disgruntled travelers at JetBlue’s Kennedy airport terminal appeared to ease on Monday as service desks functioned more smoothly and customer calm prevailed despite flight cancellations. The beleaguered company said it was canceling almost a quarter of its flights on Monday but planned to restore full operations on Tuesday, a week after a Valentine’s Day snowstorm created a travel meltdown that virtually paralyzed JetBlue.

There’s been a lot of talk around the IU campus as of late concerning a somewhat controversial decision from President Herbert to ban smoking. Take, for example, the following overheard conversation between a nonsmoker and a smoker: Nonsmoker: Pretty soon you’ll have to go off campus for that cancer stick. Ha ha.

The fear behind fear

As human beings we live with fear on a daily basis. Fear is a major factor in our decision-making. We choose careers, goods, even significant others based on these fears. We fear rejection, we fear failing, we fear being outcast from society. As a social defense mechanism, a large percentage of us battle this fear by several means. One way we handle this fear is by becoming cynical. We start to view everything negatively (so as not to get upset) and we find other cynical people that confirm our worldviews. This cynicism is a cancer to society and ironically keeps future generations from conquering their fears.

Cocaine bust in dorm leads to arrests

Stranded climbers rescued

GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. – Three climbers stranded on Mount Hood after a fall were rescued Monday after spending the night amid ferocious winds and blowing snow. “Their condition is very good at this time,” Russell Gubele, coordinating communications for the rescue operation, told CNN.

Beginning fall ’07, Quechua to fulfill IU undergraduate language requirement

IU will soon be offering a new language to fulfill undergraduate requirements. Professor Francisco Tandioy, a native speaker, will teach Quechua, the second most-spoken language in South America. Beginning Fall ’07, Tandioy will teach Quechua for four semesters. At that time, these classes will be offered in a quantity large enough to fulfill foreign language requirements, and will also fulfill the language part of the international studies major.

Hoosiers take 2 of 4 at Terrapin Invitational

It was two very different days for the IU women’s water polo team at the Terrapin Invite in College Park, Md. On Saturday the Hoosiers scored victories against host Maryland and George Washington. On Sunday they dropped their two games against No. 13 Hartwick College and No. 17 Princeton.

After long months of secretly searching for candidates, it appears the IU trustees may soon reach the end of their quest to find IU’s new president. Though the chairwoman of the Presidential Search Committee, IU trustee Sue Talbot, has maintained that the new president would be named by this summer, IU Chancellor Ken Gros Louis believes the decision will be announced before the start of the University’s spring break, March 12.

Hoosiers return home to beat No. 21 Kentucky

What a difference a few hundred miles make. The IU women’s tennis team spent last weekend in North Carolina, where the weather was comparatively balmy and everything happened according to schedule. Though very competitive, the Hoosiers weren’t able to upset either No. 11 Duke or No. 7 North Carolina.

The U.S. and Israel agreed not to work with any new Palestinian government that does not renounce violence, recognize Israel and accept existing peace agreements, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday. The U.S. and Israel agreed on the decision ahead of a three-way meeting with the Palestinians.
