Spring course takes students into California wilderness

The daunting gray walls and brownish desks of typical classrooms can get old fast. But next semester, some students will be in classes surrounded by emerald green trees and crystal-like snow-topped mountain crests. They will hike through craters formed by volcanic eruption, ski down California's Mammoth Mountain and observe 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines with the U.S Forest Service.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve, finally starting to see the hoped-for rebound in the economy, is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its last meeting of the year, allowing consumers and businesses to enjoy the lowest rates in decades into the new year.

Stocks push higher on investor optimism

NEW YORK -- Wall Street sprinted higher Monday as investors kept their faith in a strengthening economy despite Friday's disappointing employment report. The Dow Jones industrials climbed 102 points to fall just shy of 10,000.

McDonald's posts strong U.S. sales

CHICAGO -- McDonald's Corp. extended the recovery in its once-slumping restaurants to an eighth straight month Monday, reporting a double-digit gain in U.S. same-store sales and a modest improvement in Europe, its second-biggest market.

Indiana steel in better position now

Sophomore Eboni Gatlin rises at 8 a.m. every day, just as the sun is peeking into the window of her Arlington Park apartment. She gets ready for class and packs her bookbag. Then Gatlin wakes up her roommate -- her 2-year-old daughter. While the teenage pregnancy rate in the United States is declining, around 40 percent of teenage girls will become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20, and only 1.5 percent will have a college degree by the age of 30, according to www.plannedparenthood.org.

Balancing health and hunger

Junior Doug Cruise has had a hard time eating healthy lately. Cruise's most frequent indulgence is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich; whether that is preferred over one of his staples -- Ramen noodles -- is up for discussion. "What makes it difficult to eat well is the money, and how expensive good food can be," he said.

Team looks to next season

Toronto theater wall collapses on school

TORONTO -- A wall of a Toronto theater that was being demolished collapsed and hit a school next door Monday, killing one man, trapping at least one other person and injuring more than a dozen, authorities said.
