Theta antique show benefits local charities

Walking into the Bloomington Convention Center over the weekend was like stepping into a time machine. Thirty-seven vendors filled eight rooms of the convention center with thousands of antiques -- rugs, silver, paintings, quilts, crystal, books, baby shoes, china, wooden furniture, sheet music, dresses and hats -- as part of the 43rd annual Kappa Alpha Theta antique show.

Willing emasculation

Passion of the coverage

Well, I saw it. For months leading up to the release of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," the media coverage was deafening. There were interviews, debates and opinions written from people who were given advanced screenings of the film (and even opinions from people who hadn't seen the movie but still shouted loudly enough).

Safe sex, save money

The budget deficit is reaching record levels. We are fighting and funding a "war" on terrorism. Tax revenue is down because of the economic slow-down and President Bush's tax cuts. Sounds like a perfect time to waste more money.

How wasted are you?

Listening to the IU Student Association campaigns this year, I got a particular kick out of Hoosier Party's "More Beer, More Parties, More Fun" campaign fliers … until I realized the group was actually serious. Thank God the Hoosier Party didn't win -- after all, I would like my diploma to mean something once I leave. Having my potential employers sneer, "Indiana? Isn't that the No. 1 party school?" would be frustrating after having slaved for four years.

Big Red wins IUSA election

A round of applause greeted seniors Katie Diggins and Angel Rivera as they entered the Fiji house formal room Wednesday night. The respective presidential and vice presidential candidates had arrived to announce Big Red's victory in the 2004 IU Student Association elections to the rest of the ticket. Clearly, they were already aware.

Students celebrate fifth birthday over weekend

Hans Arnesen and Lanyon Blair will be celebrating their fifth birthdays on Sunday. But there are no plans for inviting kindergarten classmates over for cake and a game of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey," nor will there be a trip to the roller rink.

Bowling for charity

Minority numbers dip in Big Ten

Ohio State University and the University of Michigan have suffered smaller amounts of minority applicants after both schools revamped their admission systems for the 2003-2004 school year, according to a Chronicle of Higher Education article.

Pair of ACC teams to battle Hoosiers

After a tough loss last weekend to Western Michigan, 4-3, the No. 64 Hoosiers continue their homestand this weekend as they welcome a pair of teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the IU Tennis. IU first faces off against the North Carolina State Wolfpack at noon Saturday and resumes play at noon Sunday against the No. 27 Virginia Cavaliers.

Men set to battle Big Ten foes

"This is what we train for." Assistant track coach Wayne Pate summarized the team's upcoming weekend at the University of Michigan, the site of the 2004 Big Ten Indoor Championships. The men's team enters the meet with nearly every one of its entries in position to score in their particular event. "Things are really starting to come together," said IU coach Randy Heisler. "We've got so many guys that are ranked seventh or eighth in the conference that are capable of placing higher. If they place even one or two spots higher, they change the whole dynamic of the meet because it gives us more points and at the same time takes points away from other teams."

Better things to do than watch IU

I had a weird dream the other night. I was sitting in this bar in Austin, Texas, drinking with Bob Dole. As if this weren't strange enough, this Indian guru appears on the bar stool next to us. The guru says to me, "You are too negative. You need to live in the positive."

IU takes road trip with national ranking implications

Coming off its second big upset of the season, IU (5-2) takes its show on the road as the team looks to add two more tallies to the win column. This weekend, standing in its path to national prominence are the Marquette Golden Eagles and in-state rival Notre Dame. Still energized after their 5-2 win over No. 12 Kentucky, the Hoosiers depart Bloomington today excited and ready for their next challenge. While Marquette is not ranked as highly as the Fighting Irish, both matches are expected to be highly competitive, as IU looks to finish out its pre-conference schedule with as much momentum as possible.

Team looks to end Michigan's streak

Defending Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Champion Michigan looks for a third straight title this year, with IU looking to end that streak, as the team finished second to Michigan the past two seasons. Since 1999, IU finished in third twice and runner-up the last two seasons, as the team's last indoor title came in 2000.

Hoosiers starting 2 top pitchers in effort to get above .500

The IU baseball team will travel to Millington, Tenn., this weekend to compete in the Service Academy Classic tournament at USA Stadium. The Hoosiers will play Murray State Friday, Kentucky Saturday and end the road trip with Navy Sunday. The players emphasized that every game is important but whenever Kentucky is the opponent there is extra incentive.

League meet at hostile Purdue

The Hoosiers men's swimming team will travel to Purdue this weekend to compete in the Big Ten Championships. IU finished the regular season with a 5-7 overall record and was 3-4 in Big Ten play. The team said they hoped they have hit their peak just in time. Among the bright spots for the Hoosiers is freshman Colin Russell, who is coming off a season in which he consistently finished first and second in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Diving will be the one factor that puts the Hoosiers at a true disadvantage. Throughout the year, they have been saddled with having only one eligible diver in junior Ryan Fagan.

Hoosiers begin quest 'to be best team in Midwest'

Room service and wake-up calls must be common for the Hoosiers softball team (5-4). The team, which is fresh off trips to Florida and Texas this month, is traveling to Illinois to compete in Southern Illinois' Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic. The Hoosiers travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Indiana State (4-4), Southern Illinois (5-2) and an untested Harvard team (0-0) this weekend. The team feels it has something to prove this weekend and looks to earn a few wins against tough competition. "We're trying to be the best team in the Midwest -- that's our goal," said IU coach Sara Hayes Nottger. "ISU being in-state and Southern Illinois being in the area gives us the opportunity to compete with the best in the Midwest."

'Last chance' to make NCAA meet

The IU women's swimming and diving team takes to the water again this weekend in the IU "Last Chance" Invitational in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the SRSC. The Hoosiers host Ohio State, Illinois and the University of Indianapolis in the last meet before the NCAA Championships. For the Hoosiers, the "Last Chance" meet is a great way to show their skills before their trek to the NCAA titles.
