At the service, University dignitaries and student leaders spoke about King’s character and actions. The service started with an invocation before moving on to the remarks of faculty and students who spoke about the man King was and what his death meant to the nation.

“If the murder of Dr. King means an awakened white conscience, if the murder of Dr. King means a new thrust for black equality, Dr. King himself would feel that he has laid a small sacrifice on the altar of human freedom,” said Norman R. Dixon, a teaching associate in the Graduate School of Education according to a pamphlet from the ceremony at the IU Archives.

When Martin Luther King Jr. died in 1968, the nation was launched into mourning. The front page of the Indiana Daily Student the following day highlighted national, state and local reactions to the assassination. Violence, memorial services and shock swept the nation.
Sens. Todd Young, R-Indiana, and Joe Donnelly, D-Indiana, announced a resolution to designate Aug. 3, 2018, National Ernie Pyle Day. Ernie Pyle was a journalism student at IU and was a war correspondent during World War II.
Keith Parker, pictured on the right, was the student body president of IU during the 1970-71 term. Parker was a member of the Black Panther Party.

Corby Davis of IU and Gustave Zarnas of Ohio State University were members of the All-East Football Team that met the All-West team in the annual East-West Charity Game that raised money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The game was played in December 1938 and ended in a 0-0 tie.
