As we continue to talk about artificial intelligence, in the context of ChatGPT and similar chatbot services, I think we are losing focus of the real threats AI poses towards public safety and job security.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an adaptation of the non-fiction David Grann novel of the same name that investigates the killings of wealthy Osage people who found big oil deposits underneath their land in 1920’s Oklahoma. It’s quite a subversive film for the iconic octogenarian. The film’s length and scope allow Scorsese to reckon with the inherent evils and blood that this country is built on, as well as the consequences of complicity in the face of systemic discrimination.

Following the tentative agreement reached between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) on Sept. 27, leaders of the union have authorized their members to return to work. This effectively puts an end to a strike that will go down in Hollywood history, being the first dual strike between screenwriters and actors since 1960. However, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) remains on strike as they are yet to reenter negotiations with AMPTP. Though I believe this took far too long, I am ultimately very glad that writers efforts were successful.

“As I got older, I learned I’m a drinker. Sometimes, a drink feels like family,” are the lyrics that begin “Bug Like an Angel,”, the first track on Mitski’s seventh studio album.

Since the release of “Sour,’ Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, the 20-year-old popstar has cemented her status as one of the biggest talents of the decade thus far, breaking multiple records and garnering Grammy wins for Best New Artist, among others. While it’s hard to imagine what experiencing that level of fame must be like, “GUTS” is a pretty effective portrait of a teenager who feels a disparity between how old they feel and how old they actually are.

By the end of “Past Lives”, I felt like I had gotten to know someone. The film about two childhood best friends from South Korea who reconnect 24 years after Nora (Greta Lee) and her family immigrated to Canada. Director and writer Celine Song has created a film that is so intimate with its characters that they might as well be real people, filling a less-than-two-hour film to the brim with dialogue-heavy scenes about longing for nostalgia, love and thinking about what could have been.

Pixar’s latest film “Elemental” is a romantic comedy set in a city where all residents are either air, water, earth or fire. There are many scenes that left me, and a couple other families, confounded at our Friday morning showing at the movie theater. While the premise of the movie seems simple enough — and almost sounds like an attempt at self-parody for the animation studio that has built their legacy on tearjerkers about inanimate objects with feelings — it is dressed in an extended metaphor about xenophobia and interracial dating.

FX’s “The Bear,” a show that depicts the stressful lives of the line cooks who work for an Italian beef sandwich shop in Chicago, was instantly met with rave reviews for its stellar performances, thoughtful writing, energetic direction and record-breaking viewership numbers when it premiered a year ago. Still, it took a bit of time and convincing for me to give the comedy-drama, set in the chaotic kitchen of The Original Beef of Chicagoland, a chance.

2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was a truly spectacular addition to the superhero genre, despite being less financially successful than the box office powerhouses of more established cinematic superhero universes. The film’s visuals were unique, with each frame bursting with the same color and imagination you’d find in comic books. Its bigger gambit, however, was introducing wider moviegoing audiences to the concept of the multiverse, while maintaining a grounded perspective of its characters. In the five years since, the multiverse has become a subject of great importance in not only films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” or “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, but also the Best Picture winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. While the results may vary on the effectiveness of many of these films, I’m delighted that “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is a reminder of what made the multiverse such a novel storytelling tool in the first place.

On May 2, The Writers Guild of America voted to authorize a strike following six weeks of failed negotiations with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The WGA, which is made up of two labor unions that represent over 10,000 writers across film, television, radio and online media, demand higher pay, a structure for writers to earn streaming residuals and a regulation against the use of artificial intelligence in writing or rewriting scripts.

Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the 2002 animated film “Lilo and Stitch” has already received criticism for casting light-skinned actors to play dark-skinned Native Hawaiian characters. Many are arguing that this casting choice whitewashes the character who was beloved to many darker-skinned Native Hawaiians, who are rarely well-represented on screen.

Rumors are circulating about a possible American remake of Netflix’s monumental South Korean hit drama series Squid Game, despite the show only releasing two years ago.

It’s been two weeks since former President Donald Trump was indicted by the Manhattan District Attorney on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal evidence of negative stories about himself leaking to the public, according to an article by MSNBC. There is a lot of speculation that these stories could have influenced the 2016 election had they come out.
