Chocolate Prom to entice all ages
____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Rhino’s Youth Media Center and All-Ages Club will present its 4th annual Chocolate Prom from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday. The prom is featured in conjunction with the “Week of Chocolate,” which benefits nine not-for-profit organizations.Organizers of the dance said it will be “A Prom for Everyone,” which is the evening’s slogan.“It’s a fun opportunity for people to get dressed up, or not, and come out and have fun whether they’re 10 or 80,” said Thom Atkinson, chair of Rhino’s advisory board. This year’s prom boasts a variety of activities, including live performances from artists Community Currency, Xenosound and Among the Sky. In addition to music, there will be a prom king and queen contest and as the name denotes, lots of chocolate. “Last year, I found that the main selling point of the event was the chocolate,” freshman Sarah Van Tassel said. While the chocolate might be enough to entice potential prom-goers, the altruistically minded should be aware that all proceeds for the event go to the benefit of Rhino’s.David Britton, assistant director of Rhino’s, said proceeds will go toward keeping club doors open and funding for media activities such as music, journalism and mural arts.“We’re the only youth center of our kind locally,” he said. “A lot of times after school, unless students are involved in sports, there’s not a lot to do when you’re in that age range.” This year’s prom does not center around a particular theme, but those with a flair for fashion should feel free to dress up. Roughly two-thirds of last year’s crowd donned formal attire.Advance tickets to the event are $5 per person and can be purchased online at www.rhinosyouthcenter.org, at Rhino’s or at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater box office. Admission at the door will cost $10 per person or $15 per couple.
