Camp Connections provides opportunities for kids with language challenges
It’s 8:15. The campers will arrive shortly at Camp Connections, but first, the staff members that run the camp have some learning to do themselves. They all pile into a single classroom, sitting at desks too low for an adult but just right for a child.

Mark Howard, a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary school, gives a short lecture to Camp Connections staff on how to use token economies as external reinforcement. Token economies reward students for positive behavior and allow them to visualize how close they are to meeting a goal.

With “Royals,” the 17-year-old girl who sang she had, “never seen a diamond in the flesh,” introduced the world to a new, mononymous pop star — Lorde.
Bolam’s work, exhibited at The Venue, frequently features nature. “I’m the type of person who finds a lot of resonance in nature,” she said.
Sidney Bolam carves pieces from limestone, frequently drawing inspiration from nature or history. Her work can be seen at The Venue during the month of June.
The exhibit includes advice on how to preserve different materials like cloth, paper and metal. Newspapers are a notoriously difficult item to preserve, Collection Manager Hilary Fleck noted.
Hilary Fleck, the collection manager at the Monroe County History Center, says that even small changes can help preserve heirlooms for longer. Avoiding storing items in basements and attics is critical, she said.
