A second Showalter Fountain fish is down. During the Nearly Naked Mile, a charity race that began at 10 p.m. last night, student runners jumped into the fountain and splashed in the water. After the run and just before 11 p.m., IUPD officers stood by the water, overlooking the railing to the right of the Venus statue’s hands. A dark shadow cast in the green light showed the sunk fish snapped off its base. Four workers from the IU Physical Plant arrived in two white trucks, and one dipped his arm into the water. He said the fish was down about 3 feet. After peering over the ledge, he said the fish was too heavy to lift without equipment or more people. One plumber said he didn’t want to risk scratching the fish or the fountain. At press time, the workers decided to keep watch over the fish until more help arrived. The fish to the right of the submerged statue disappeared Aug. 1, and after more than two months, the fish is still missing.
A remaining fish stands near the empty space of a fallen fish Monday in Showalter Fountain. The fish's supports were broken after runners in the Nearly Naked Mile sat on it.
