On Thursday, Jan. 13, IU senior Peyton Conner’s at-home COVID-19 test was negative. The next day she had a sore throat. Conner took a symptomatic test that night, Jan. 14, and received a positive result.

Evidence suggests many healthcare providers unknowingly have a predetermined bias against people of color, according to the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Ever since IU junior Shawn Beeler was a child, he knew he wanted to become a doctor. Beeler said he hopes to change bias towards people of color in healthcare in the future.

I am a child from the participation-trophy era. I got validation from my parents, my sisters and my coaches, who coached the dreadful local basketball and soccer leagues I participated in while growing up. I was not even good at sports. Our youth's generation is led to the misbelief that we are all champions. Each trophy we received, our egos got a little bit bigger.

Three days into the first week of this semester, I found out I had been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Though I am vaccinated, I was in close, unmasked contact with this person for hours at a time. So I decided to stay home.

If someone asked for a fun fact about me two years ago, it would be that I have a twin sister, Taylor, and our birthday is July 4. Today, my fun fact is that all three of my vaccines came from different states. Each time I needed the vaccine, I have been at different stages and places in life.

IU’s clinical psychology program plans to involve its students within several departments of the IU Regional Academic Health Center which opened to patients in Bloomington this December. Once the program recruits a professor as its lead, it will allow students to partner with professionals in nursing, social work, speech and hearing, and other medical fields.
