IU President Pamela Whitten was awarded a $162,500 bonus by the Board of Trustees for her second-year performance Indiana public media article obtained in a public records request. The bonus was approved unanimously by the board at their Aug. 24 meeting. The bonus is 25% of her $650,000 annual salary, the maximum allowed in Whitten's employment contract.

Bloomington voters took to the polls today to vote on a school funding referendum as well as races for mayor, city clerk and city council. Though the referendum and the District 3 city council race were the only contested items on the ballot, 10,441 voters cast their ballots in this election.

About 30 people sat in a circle Monday at the Frangipani Room in the Indiana Memorial Union. They passed a microphone around, solemnly reading names, ages ranging from as young as two years old and as old as 79 and hometowns off a list projected onto the screen at the front of the room. These names belong to people missing or killed during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. While many news outlets have reported on the daunting number of casualties and hostages, the IU Robert and Sandra Borns Jewish Studies Program vigil recognized each number represents a human life.

In the flashing red and blue light of police cars, students in support of Israel and students in support of Palestine faced off at Sample Gates on Monday night, separated by a line of police officers. For 20 minutes, both groups waved their flags, chanted and yelled at each other — the tense culmination of a night that began with two peaceful gatherings.

According to Bloomington Eastside barista Stefanie Sharp, employees have visited all non-franchise Starbucks locations in Bloomington.

Workers at the Bloomington Eastside Starbucks, located at Third Street and 46 Bypass, have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to unionize with Starbucks Workers United, a collective of more than 315 U.S. Starbucks Partners across the country. Workers sent a letter to Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan announcing their unionization Monday.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb appointed Kyle Seibert, an IU master’s of public affairs student and former IU student body president during the 2022-23 academic year, to the IU Board of Trustees last week. Holcomb also appointed J. Timothy Morris, a Kelley School of Business alumnus and partner of Proprium Capital Partners, to the board, according to a recent IU press release.

The Bloomington Police Department is short-staffed and strained, Fraternal Order of Police President Paul Post said. The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition United Electric Workers submitted a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) petition to IU administration on March 31, calling for an 8% salary increase, according to a press release. COLA is an increase in an employee's rate of pay based on estimates of how much money is required to maintain a given standard of living.

IU released the details of its seven-year strategic plan, IUB 2030, on Tuesday after announcing the plan last fall. The plan includes three pillars, which focus on increasing experiential learning, impactful research and the university’s global reach.
