Privilege is a right or benefit given to some people and not others. The first time I ever came across this concept was when I was 15. My theatre teacher held a discussion about the difference in privilege between the students in class. After this class, I thought long and hard about the privilege I had. I thought the only privilege I had was being able to take an international holiday almost every year with my family.

With finals knocking on our doors, stress levels have reached an all-time high. Constant stress leads to possibilities of headaches, fatigue and tense shoulders. This can cause one to chug down coffee by the hour and pop Advils to bid goodbye to those gruesome headaches. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can have an adverse effect on us physically, which is why it’s essential to try and get rid of this habit.

The week of my 17th birthday, I went scuba diving, took an exam and became a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Diver. This was probably one of the best experiences of my life. Breathing and swimming through currents with fish and corals was calming in a way I’ve never experienced before.

With the solar eclipse passing right over Bloomington, it’s been the talk of the town for the last few months now. Hearing about it reminded me of the times there were solar eclipses when I lived in Bangalore, India, and how I would usually spend those days. My father was always greatly intrigued by space and all its wondrous spectacles, from galaxies to black holes to solar and lunar eclipses.

On March 26, 19 years ago, I was born on the same day as Holi. I have always loved this, because Holi is an Indian festival celebrating colors and love, and I loved that I was connected to this festival. The festival of Holi is a Hindu festival marking the beginning of spring. However, to my friends and I, it was always the day we got to play with colors and water and dance to good music all day long.

The New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid show is famed to be one of the best flower shows in the world. This year, they took it up a notch and integrated fashion into their flower show. Using several types of orchids from across the globe that they grew in its Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the show displayed different outfits by fashion designers who integrated orchids into the fabrics of the clothing. This flower show began on February 19th and will continue running until April 21st.

From watching “Gossip Girl” to “How I Met Your Mother” (which I do believe is better than “Friends”) to “Suits,” I’ve experienced New York City from my little corner in Bangalore, India. Moving to the U.S. meant getting the chance to travel to NYC, and I did not miss the chance. I booked my tickets to New York for spring break the first week of January, dedicated to experiencing the city for what it truly is: a cultural and artistic hub.

The IU Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance performed “Pipeline,” a play by Dominique Morisseau at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29-March 8 in the Wells-Metz Theatre. Morisseau has written numerous plays focusing on marginalized communities and the challenges they face. I was truly amazed by the performance, and how IU put up the play. The setting, acting and music were outstanding, and it echoed perfection.

As an international student and freshman from India, I experienced a multitude of cultural shocks this year, from only being able to cross the roads at the zebra crossing to the drastic weather changes. One of the biggest shocks was how early people ate dinner in the U.S. Waiting for my father to come back home from work and then sitting for dinner, I was very well-accustomed to eating dinner after 9 p.m. However, as a student living on campus, learning all dining halls close at 9 p.m., it was always a race against time: Will I make it to dinner before the halls close?

My mother enrolled me into classical ballet when I was 3 years old — not an uncommon activity for many young children if they’re looking to become professional ballet dancers. During my seven-year-long journey with ballet, people from my school constantly passed comments like, “ballet is good for you; its dainty and weak, just like you.”

This was my first winter in the mighty Midwest, and boy did I underestimate the chill.
