You may have recently heard buzz about PFAS — perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances otherwise known as “forever chemicals” that contaminate everything from our water supply to food containers to clothing and have long-term health effects.

Though the past few years have had no shortage of aggressive debate over the participation of transgender women in women’s sports, this summer brought a resurgence of attention to the issue. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won a match against Angela Carini of Italy at the 2024 Paris Olympics when Carini opted to pull out of the match after just 46 seconds. Misinformation immediately spread online, with many claiming Khelif was a transgender woman who had an innate biological advantage over Carini in the competition.

When I moved back into my house in Bloomington this August, I took note of the new neighbors joining my block as they funneled into their new houses with cars packed to the brim and concerned parents in tow. Moving into a new place almost inevitably generates plenty of trash, including furniture, appliances and all the other pieces of plastic we need to buy to live comfortably.

When I was in middle school, I probably believed at least half the people in my life hated me, found me annoying or thought I was weird. That might seem extreme, but to me, it made perfect sense, because it was exactly how I viewed a fair amount of my peers as well.

If you’ve been in class the last couple of days, I would be shocked if you haven’t seen the comically large, pastel colored Stanley cups on tables and in the hands of students walking through campus.

“If you’re young and you’re pretty, you do not want to look too attractive at work,” proclaimed a woman on TikTok with a backdrop of notes on specific tips that she believes will help women be treated with respect in the office. She advises against “over-dressing,” wearing stiletto heels or wearing a full-face of makeup in addition to telling women to “have some imperfections”. Her video has nearly 150,000 likes.

I still remember the embarrassment of opening a wrapped gift at my eighth birthday party — probably expecting a toy or book — and receiving a notice of a donation made to charity in my name. I had no idea what to make of the slip of paper in my hands at the time but, looking back, I now see so much value in non-traditional gifts and how they can help us revive the true meaning of the holidays beyond overconsumption of material items.

I started to understand what it meant to be in the Kelley School of Business roughly around the time I made my decision to attend IU in the spring of my senior year of high school. I hadn’t really known of Kelley before, but in scrolling through various posts on Instagram, Facebook and other social media accounts made to connect incoming students, many posts started to echo each other:

As the winter months roll in, bringing along darker days, colder air and generally lower spirits, I am feeling especially inspired by the Danish concept of hygge and how we can practice it to soften winter’s harshness and even learn to enjoy the cold. I am no expert on the language and culture, but from reading about the phrase, it seems to describe an intentional focus on taking life slow, appreciating small things, spending quality time with loved ones and prioritizing warmth and coziness.

How does that song go again? “...the best thing about being a woman, is the prerogative to be inextricably bound to capitalism and the never ending dissatisfaction with oneself that comes with it!” Or something like that.

Coming to IU for the first time, whether from another city in Indiana or from over 600 miles away on the east coast, can feel like stepping into Disney World. When I visited Bloomington for the first time, I was immediately charmed by the walkable downtown, quirky small businesses, lively arts scene and gorgeous campus landscaping and architecture.

Living with roommates is a central part of the college experience for many students, whether it be in a first-year dorm hall, apartment or house. You may be sharing everything from a room to a kitchen and bathroom, and this sharing does not come without its challenges.

Nothing gets me more than the “former gifted kid” idea that teenagers and young adults seem to constantly reference on TikTok — typically in the form of slightly self-deprecating videos that poke fun at their high expectations for their performance because they were “gifted” as children.

Growing up, and especially in my last couple years of high school, I felt this crushing pressure and impossible expectation to complete various life milestones as quickly as I could. When my dad encouraged me to take a gap year, I barely considered the option out of the fear I would be “falling behind” the rest of my peers.

Scrolling through TikTok, I often stumble upon a video urging me to buy various items promised to elevate my self-care routine. Things like facial ice rollers, LED light teeth whitening trays, sea moss supplements, infrared sauna pods — the list only gets more absurd.

I began cycling on the Bloomington roads in the past two weeks. Thus far, I have experienced harassment from drivers on nearly every single one of my rides. Middle fingers, aggressive honking, shouting and drivers who pass as close and fast as possible are commonplace, and experienced cyclists seem disturbingly used to this behavior.

Dear Leila,

I cannot recount a time I didn’t make a man deeply uncomfortable when me or one of my female friends joked that Amy Dunne was justified in “Gone Girl.” Sure, she murdered someone and nearly got her husband arrested while ruining his public image, but I can’t say she acted without reason.

Greetings, advice seekers… or dedicated Carolyn Hax readers and r/relationship_advice perusers who might be looking for a Hoosier lens on their weekly reading. While nothing makes me qualified to dish out advice, I love listening to people’s problems and have made enough mistakes in my life — and at IU — to guide some of you in the right direction.
