Women of color do not receive the proper care in the health care system due to systematic racism, prejudice and discrimination. According to the League of United Latin American Citizens, “racial minorities and other vulnerable populations suffer a disproportionate burden of disease. These groups of people suffer from poorer health outcomes due to disparities in accessing health insurance coverage, quality care, and other factors.” The lack of care women of color receive is due to stereotypes and biased opinions which are oftentimes fatal for the patient.

On Jan. 11, an Asian American IU student was stabbed multiple times on a Bloomington city bus by another passenger. The assailant later admitted to targeting the student because of her race. I am a professor at IU who researches and teaches Asian American cultural studies. I am also an Asian American person myself. It is an identity I’m proud of.
I am a resident of Cook County, home to the best city in the U.S.: Chicago! Chicago has a rich history of sports, considering the large rivalry between Cubs and White Sox fans. I remember when my Granny, younger brother and I would watch the Cubs play against the White Sox. Our eyes were glued to the TV. To us, this was a huge event – and the memory will stick with me forever.
